Its really as simple as that.

Although it'd be nice if you could expand the hot path further...

From MSDN:
You've got 0% in UI processing. Your UI thread is spending all of its time in "Execution Time". In order for everything to be response you WANT "UI Processing" to be closer to 100% as possible.

I figured that's what I want biggrin.gif I don't know how to achieve it, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I'm very careful not to perform any extra tasks on the main thread.
Is the high activity on the message pump the reason why the thread is in Execution and not in UI Processing? Or those are not related?

Also, here's a more pressing matter:
My app runs 100 times faster while profiler is running. **And that's not the good ol' Release vs Debug build.

Every config in the solution is set to Release, Optimize Code is Enabled, Unmanaged Code Debugging is Disabled, VS host process is Disabled, and I'm not running it from within VS, I'm running the actual EXE in the Release folder. I did all that after reading a ton of "app is fast in profiler" threads on StackOverflow. And it's still slow.

Then I run the profiler from within VS, and it's blazing-fast and everything works like it should! drool.gif How do I get that effect?

Yes it seems like it is - I don't know what's going on inside your message pump though, but its clearly the hot path. It might not even be your fault. Remember its not just your code running. It could easily be third party garbage. I can tell you now though that its not a Microsoft component. Likely a control or UI component you are using.

Its a difficult one, without access to your machine it is hard to say. All I can say is try to run the release build on a different PC and observe.

1. Ok then, can I somehow tell the UI thread to mind its UI business at least some % of the time?

2. Here's what I gathered:

- App runs slow on my machine in both x86 and x64 mode, in both Release and Debug, and in both the IDE's host process and its own process.
- App runs slow on another Win7 x64 machine in both x86 and x64 mode.
- App runs fast on my machine in both x86 and x64 mode when Performance Wizard is running.
- App runs fast on a Win7 x86 machine in x86 mode.

And I'm still clueless...

1. No.
2. Interesting that it runs as normal on a 32-bit machine. Try to NGEN your release assemblies, then run the application on all your test PCs again.

Which version of the framework are you targeting? If not 4.0 or 4.5, I'd recommend you temporarily build a release that targets either of those and then test again.

1. Then how can I solve this issue? frown.gif
2. I don't know how to use NGEN, and also the test PCs were available only once, as they are my co-worker's PCs, and they need them..
I'm developing for 3.0. but switched to 4.0.3 temporarily - didn't yield any positive results.

Here's an interesting note:

I start the app from the exe, and it runs slowly.
Then, from VS I start Performance Wizard - CPU Profiling, it starts a New instance of my program, and the OLD instance speeds up!!

edit: If I stop profiling or close the new instance, the old becomes slow again, but if I pause profiling, it keeps going fast.

edit1: if I attach the profiler to the already running app, it speeds up.

NGEN: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/6t9t5wcf%28v=vs.80%29.aspx

All the information you'll need is there.

I'm almost willing to bet its the control library you are using causing the issue. Though, unless I had the whole code and project, its hard for anyone to solve smile.gif

Do you have any idea what would the profiler change globally so that it would affect already running applications outside of VS?

It's quite bizarre. Maybe it enables a global flag... do you have the Windows SDK installed? If so there's a utility called GFlags. Play with those options and see if you find one which causes the app to run "fast".

I just installed the WinSDK, but I can't find this tool anywhere, searching C:\ for gflags.exe gives 0 results.

(I did check "Debugging Tools" when I installed it)
