newbie overclocker @3.8ghz (update 4.27Ghz) E8500 on P45 with DDR2 800

Thread Starter
well hello there.

i've done a heap of reading and got my system from 3160 MHz to 3800 MHz pretty easily.
i'm not sure but i think i'm now limited by my RAM.
looking for any mistakes of my progress so far and any tips to push it further.

CPU - intel E8500
locked multiplier x9.5
running with stock cooling

MB - GA-EP45-DS4P
seems to have decent heat sinks on the chipset

RAM - Patriot PVS28G 6400ELK
(800MHz 6-5-5-15)(400MHz 5-5-5-15)(266MHz 4-4-4-10)
(CPUZ shows voltage as 1.8 but on the chip it says @1.9)
its got massive heatsinks on it but if i cant push it past 800MHz whats the point?

GPU - Radeon HD 4870
dont intend to overclock this.
the game i'm looking to play actually seems to be CPU bottlenecked.
increasing from 3.16GHz to 3.8 GHz has already made it playable.

the stock FSB speed is 333 Mhz
the E8500 runs at 3.16GHz with the max multiplier of x9.5

with default voltage i was able to get a stable overclock up to 395 MHz on the FSB.
by boosting the CPU VCore from 1.25 to 1.30 i was able to get the FSB to 400 MHz (CPU 3800MHz)

i found some failry good info (i think) on which voltages to modify and which to leave on [auto]
the bios lists the folowing voltages. i've listed their values with the 400MHz FSB
Code:
1.30 CPU Vcore man
1.20 CPU Termination auto
1.66 CPU PLL auto
0.76 CPU Ref auto
0.80 CPU ref2 auto

1.10 MCH Core man
0.76 MCH Ref auto
0.90 MCH Dram auto
1.50 ICH I/O man
1.10 ICH Core man

1.80 Dram Voltage man
0.90 Dram Termination auto
0.90 Channel A Ref auto
0.90 Channel B Ref auto

as i'm writing this i've realised the only [auto] set voltage that has changed from the stock settings is CPU PLL (from 1.50 to 1.66)

i tried pushing the FSB up to 410 but when it wasnt stable i wasnt keen to continue without first asking if it was ok to push RAM past its 800 MHz. with the locked multiplier i assume i'd have to have faster RAM to push the FSB and CPU higher. there is no setting in BIOS to set the RAM to less than 2x the FSB. i could set it higher but not lower.

i've been using CPU-Z and EasyTune6 to monitor system stats. not using easytune to do the O/C though, doing it in BIOS. using passmark's performance test 8 for benchmarking and prime95 for stress testing. also used memtest85 to check my memory.

amibent temp is about 15C. stock idle CPU/System temp is 22C / 30C. 100% Loaded at 400MHz FSB CPU/system is 56C / 46C.

i have not yet attempted to tighten up the timing on the memory. i read to get the O/C stable first then worry about tweaking things like timings and suspend states (currently off).

thanks in advance for any advice.

as the saying goes when the student is ready he will find a teacher.
I did some more reading and found some decent info.

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=2190&page=5

this seems to show DDR2-800 ram running as high as 1260MHz.

so now I just have determine how far I can push mine.

if a mod wants to move this to the intel memory forum perhaps someone else might find it useful in the furture.

upped the CPU voltage to 1.350 and the RAM voltage to 2.10
got the FSB to 440Mhz. so RAM at 880MHz and CPU at 4.18 GHz.
am able to benchmark and will run a stability test over night.

posted at 450Mhz FSB but didnt completely start windows.

attempted 450MHz with 1.375v CPU and 2.2v RAM.
seemed to start windows but broke something.
in fact system SSD drive was corrupted and had to reinstall windows. was able to start win 7 but explorer.exe didnt load. had normal login screen but once logged in was no desktop.

in BIOS the voltage selction for RAM over 2.080v shows in red. my current setting of 2.10v is the first setting "into the red".

wondering if i should keep pushing things or quit while i'm ahead.

some notes for myself others may find useful.

most info from http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Understanding-All-Voltage-Configurations-from-the-Motherboard/995/4

CPU PLL - voltage used by CPU clock multiplier
CPU Term - FSB voltage
CPU Ref - logical threshold (set to 0.626 x CPU Term)
CPU Ref2 - logical threshold (set to 0.673 x CPU Term)
CPU Vcore - main CPU voltage

DRAM Voltage - voltage on memory bus
DRAM Term - feeds termination logic (set to half DRAM Voltage)
Chan A Ref { above Ref is logical 1
Chan B Ref { below Ref is logical 0 (set both Ref to half DRAM Voltage)

MCH Core - north bridge voltage
MCH / DRAM Ref - logical threshold (half DRAM Voltage)
MCH Ref - logical threshold (default is 0.633 CPU Term)
ICH I/O - I/O voltage
ICH Core - south bridge

CPU Clock Drive - voltage of CPU base clock
PCI Express Clock Drive - voltage on PCI-E lanes

update - have POST / Login to windows @ 460 FSB and stable at 450 FSB

Thanks for posting your OC log, I have a "golden" E8600 I got for free that I want to overclock (for HWBot), I just need to geta mmotherboard and possibly some more DDR2 (I have some OCZ DDR2-800 4-4-4-12, 4x2GB Samsung DDR2-800 3-3-3-9, some Crucial DDR2-1066 4-5-4-13, and about 50-60 misc sticks).
It's going to be turned into my HTPC/media server/backup gaming rig once I get the HWBot points, and I am going to throw a pair of 5970s or 5870s in for the heck of it.

Looking forward to more updates!
