Sound card or not to sound card?

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Planning on picking up some AD700's and also some of these speakers http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-003-ER&tool=3

What I would like to know, is it worth buying a £20 ($30-40) sound card - over my onboard sound, or should I stretch to something like the Asus Xonar STX for £120.00?

I currently have an MSI MPower mobo if that helps.

Any info/experience would be great.

If you want to stretch your budget, and you want speakers and headphones, then look for the audio engine D1. You can use it as both a headphone amp and a speaker preamp. It will be external and it will give you a nice way to control the volume of your music/games. It should also be slightly cheaper and sound better than the stx.

Ok cool - does that work as a DAC or just an amp? If its just working as an amp does my sound still get converted by the onboard sound?

Do you know what the Creative X-Fi HD USB Soundcard is like? Seems slightly cheaper and does the same sort of thing? Does the Audio engine have a better dac?
