[Ars] Google to sell unlocked Galaxy S 4 with stock Android 4.2 on June 26 - Page 4

ok samsung that was a smart move, congrats

you saw how the n4 stole market from every maker

is it too hard to make the phone updated to the last android and without lag by removing all your bloatware??

sony is the worse at updating things, they really need to copy this move

Why would I buy this? All it does is save me the trouble of flashing an Android 4.2.2 ROM on it myself.

The difference, though, is that this version of stock android will be developped and supported directly by Google, with proper driver access from Samsung. Basically what this means, is no more of the bugs / stability issues / unsupported hardware (think of all the sensors in the s4) that would typically come with a rom created by enthousiasts.

I wonder how these phones will be distributed outside of the US, because you can't buy hardware from Google Play outside of the US atm I think.

The new Exynos processor is supposed to be more efficient due to big-little core strategy. But if I were a developer, I would love to work with the Qualcomm processor instead.
Not sure about other places in the US. There is LTE for AT&T at least in the Bay Area now. Probably Austin TX and multiple other big cities also, if I remember correctly.

Correction, T-Mobile is just getting into the LTE game now. ATT has been in it for some time now.

From everything I have read, the S4 is a pretty solid and zippy device. However, I could never justify spending that kind of money on a phone. I'll just get a Nexus 4 and be happy. rolleyes.gif

That's the prices for non subsidized devices around the globe. USA cellphone market has a severely distorted view of how much a device actually costs

What kind of smart phone are you using? I don't like the pricing either, but you have to roll with it. Non-subsidized smart phone prices have been like this for a very long time for premium smartphones - You can either lower the up front cost by signing a 2 year contract with a subsidized phone (and pay more in the long run) or pay the non-subsidized cost up front.

Personally, while the price doesn't sit well with me - I use my smartphone (using an iphone5) for enough things that i'll just pay it. Fortunately, the iphone has a very high resale price (unlike other android phones, even the samsung galaxy) which allows me to upgrade to the latest iteration on a yearly basis for very little cost. And please, before someone argues about Apple or smartphone brands that isn't my point. The salient point here is that these costs shouldn't be surprising, things have been this way for a while, unfortunately - if you want a premium smartphone, you're looking at a high upfront cost.

If you're on a budget the only thing I can suggest is wait for Black Friday - there are some incredible deals, even on premium phones, every Black Friday in the states. I believe last year I saw the iphone 4S for 99 bucks, which isn't bad at all.

I found this regarding TouchWiz, so it pretty much means all of these "features" are gone? AirView looks like an interesting enough feature that could be useful on more than one occasion (e.g. hands dirty from eating).
