[Ars] Google to sell unlocked Galaxy S 4 with stock Android 4.2 on June 26 - Page 5

It's so annoying that this won't be selling in the U.K..
Is there any kind of rooting functionality where I can "downgrade" to stock android?

Coming from an S3, I'm quite tempted to scoop this up. I wasn't going to bother before, but knowing that I can get an S4 that will always have the latest version of Android....yeah want.

It's quite annoying with the S3 to have to run a hacked up rom where something is almost always broken or you can't update without doing a full backup and restore.

If you just want stock Android with no modifications you can just flash an AOSP ROM and you'll be set to go. Another good one is AOKP. Almost stock Android with a few extra features and modifications thrown in.

Same, was going to skip the S4, but prompt android updates is very tempting...

I don't have any particular grudge against touchwiz , but being free of bloat by default is also nice.

LOL

I just wanted to add that the previous comments about your post were spot on... plus

Where I come from the iphone 5 is selling for over $1000+ dollars and apple fans are buying it... So $650 is cheap compared to the hardware in the iphone (unsubsidized price of course). For an unsubsidized S4, we pay about $700-$750 here but for my S4 I'm paying about $43 a month with unlimited LTE internet plan locked for 2 years.

Not trying to start a flame war here, just mentioning specifics in my country about pricing and people who buy them.

So yeah, I guess you're right there is one born every minute (it just depends on how you look at it)! thumb.gif

Will be purchasing the second I can. I love my Nexus 4, but the battery life and lack of LTE are serious negatives.

I don't know what country you're from, but here in the US they're all the same price. The unsubsized costs for popular phones in the US:

Galaxy S4 : 639.99 (16GB)
HTC One : 649.99 (64GB)
iPhone 5 : 649.99 (64GB)
Google S4: 649.99 (unknown memory)

There is absolutely no difference in cost. If you want a good smartphone, these are typical costs - You either pay upfront and get an uncarrier plan or you can subsidize the cost, pay substantially less, and get a 2 year contract in which you pay more in the long term. Again, your country is apparently very different in terms of pricing (where you from, out of curiosity?). That isn't the norm - in most countries, costs are identical among all of the most popular smartphones. The only outlier I can think of is Windows Phone, but does anyone seriously use that crap? They went down in price to around 550$ (at least, the lumia 920 did) because everyone hates Windows phone.

I'm not saying that one smartphone is better than the other, although you're clearly ranting about Apple in your post. I use iphone because all of my friends use iMessage, the huge software and ebook ecosystem, and I have a lot of songs in my itunes library (also had an ipod in the past with a huge library.) Anyway, my point here is that all premium smart phones cost about the same price in the US and most EU countries. So to say that Apple in particular costs more, is not accurate. Apparently things are just wildly different in your country.

I'm from Asia and the prices do vary a lot from country to country here. As for ranting on Apple, I wasn't really ranting about it, I was just using it as an example (price wise here) because it's the most expensive phone sold here. You 're right about the windows phones though, Nokia has lowered prices around here compared to the Sammy's and the Apple's.

I also wasn't saying that Apple is expensive all over the world, I was saying that for people to say that it's ridiculous to pay $650 for a phone when there are clearly more expensive phones out there (in the example I gave , Apple is very expensive here - if there was another phone as expensive or more expensive then I would use it as an example) that people pay for.

I hope that makes sense? thumb.gif

I want this, but I'm not in the US frown.gif

This just needs to be available on all carriers with the normal S4 - it looks a TON better due to native Google support.
