GPU Voltage 2D vs 3D

Hello all,

I picked up a Sapphire 7970 OC Dual -X model 11197-03-40G (blue PCB). Stock with BIOS # 2 is 1000/1450. I'm trying to get a bit more out of this card even though it's currently running solid at 1105/1600 on stock V. Afterburner reads the stock voltage at 1112mV. I have the power limit set to +20% and CCC overdrive disabled. Now this is where it gets interesting.

At the stock 1.112V:
GPU-Z reports VCC when playing a youtube video (2D) at 1.109 ... close enough.
GPU-Z reports VCC when playing any game (3D) at 1.068 .....hmmmmm

With AB set to 1.200V:
GPU-Z reports VCC when playing a youtube video (2D) at 1.198 ... still close enough.
GPU-Z reports VCC when playing any game/Kombustor/3dmark/etc (3D) at 1.068 .....still hmmmm

Same story at 1.250 and 1.300V. I get the same 1.068V with 3D applications.

Now its great that my card pulls the right voltage when I'm watching Charles Barkley highlight videos on youtube but that is not when I want it to. I herd that vdroop is a bit of an issue with these cards but I don't think that the case here. Is it possible that the gpu IS getting say the 1.200V with a full 3D load and GPU-Z is not reading correctly? Could it be voltage lock, even though i can raise the V and get accurate readings with GPU-Z? Also if i force constant voltage with AB the VCC stays at the idle normal 0.947V. I'm not a big fan of TRIXX but, i have tried using it with the same results as above with AB.

Any input would be helpful.

Thanks!

I've been reading up some more on this card. Could it be low TDP, or maybe AMD Powertune kind of restricting the card in some way? Any info would help. Thanks!
