Current Pending Sector / Reallocated Sector count

Thread Starter

As you can see Reallocated Sector count raw value is 15 and Pending Sector count is D9. I assume this is a hexadecimal count which means the decimal count is 21 and 217 respectively.I also ran WD data lifeguard quick test but it failed to finish the S.M.A.R.T test (a message pops out "Status Code = 07 (failed to read element)").

This is the only hard drive on my rig and I have no idea what these numbers mean. Is there any point in zeroing the drive?

Yes, it is in hex.

Back up your data BEFORE doing a chkdsk /r.

A chkdsk /r serves to reallocate the pending sectors. However, there is a risk of it killing the drive if it is badly damaged so back up first.

Update:

So I ran chkdsk /r a bunch of times each time finding new index errors and bad sectors. At one point I zeroed the drive completely, ran chkdsk /r again and WD Lifeguard and found even more bad sectors. Afterwards I installed Windows 7 again. Windows found some corrupt files so I ran chkdsk /r again which found new index errors (this happened a day after a fresh installation). Sometimes the drive works fine and in other times it becomes none responsive. Usually happens when Highest Active Time is stuck at 100% (can be seen at Resource Monitor -> Disk), it even failed to boot up couple of times.

I ran CrystalDiskInfo and HD tune:

It looks like raw count of pending sector count went down while reallocated sector count went up.
I would say that the hard drive is steel unreliable. Please let me know if you got any suggestions or programs that might help.

The drive is broken, get a new one.

Pending sectors become reallocated sectors when they are checked and confirmed bad. The drive will continue to degrade until it fails outright, and you are taking a serious gamble with any data you put on it.
