Define additive? As far as games are concerned the 690 only has 2GB of VRAM.

But, but why did they advertise it as 4gb if it only sees/uses 2gb?

They add it instead of define the usable amount for marketing purposes.

Maybe next-gen consoles will bring with them a welcomed increase in graphics/memory-usage and we'll actually need that extra VRAM. Soon enough I'm sure.

Anyways...this is my next card. Sold one Titan to work on a side-project, so, have to update my sig rig. But yeah, thinking about selling my Titan and getting 2 780's.

Several people have shown that Crysis 3 in 1440P surround maxxes out the 6GB frame buffer. I myself can go over 4GB if I want to. I just think for future proofing 4GB would have been better for this card. But GTX Titan will always be there for the surround users and the GTX 780 for sngle screen users that dont need that extra bit of RAM and performance.

How can you hit 4GBs with a 690?

Edit: Oh, maybe you just mean hypothetically? Well, yeah, I guess I shouldn't have worded it exactly the way I did. I just mean...there's already a small market for Titan as it is. There's even a smaller market for those that actually need Titan's 6GBs of memory. So...I just mean that the 780 will be even more popular because people will be able to get a GK110 without having to pay the price premium that comes along with buying a 6GB GPU.

I had a 2GB card and another card 4GB (GTX670s)
in the usual game, with the same settings, the 670 2GB, displayed, with afterburner OSD, use of within the 2GB VRAM.
the 4GB marked an increased usage, 2.4GB.
the game was fine with both cards.
what you see in the OSD menu on the consumption of VRAM does not count 100%

That I don't know, maybe someone else does. My guess is either for marketing, or maybe things other than gaming can use all 4gb at once. Like rendering vidoes, or CAD work. Although i'm not sure who would by a 690 for those purposes.

Good question.

Additive being in the marketing of the cards for sale such as newegg. They all list the 690 as 4gb of memory

780GTX 3GB will do well, very well at 2560x1440/1600p and in surround

Probably not as well as a 690 with 2gb of ram. Just not enough gpu muscle there.

Definitely true. I've heard many many times over the years that a lot of games out there cache VRAM that's available. Whether this helps a lot with performance or not, I'm not sure. Would someone be able to tell the difference on the cards in your example if they were set up on 2 screens side-by-side? Most likely not. So...some may need that 6GBs, some may not. I'm sure most Titan owner's don't though and just got it for the GPU horsepower, like I did. Which means that the 780 will be a nice compromise, considering the much cheaper cost for only a small performance hit and the loss of a few gigs of VRAM, memory which I will most likely not use in the near future anyways.

Not sure if serious thinking.gif

My BF3 uses 2.5GB in 1080p surround, so I imagine 1440p and 1600p will require more than that 500MB.
