No. There is never an instance where you can add more VRAM. It's always shared when running more than one GPU, whether it be 2 680's or the 690's two GPUs thumb.gif

nVidia marketing ploy was a few people saying it has / had 4GB of VRAM... rolleyes.gif
physically I guess it does with 2GB for each GPU but in reality is doesn't add up.
so 2GB and VRAM wall at larger resolutions with levels of AA is what you hit and the 690's downfall.

Well I see the 7990 listed as having 6GBs of VRAM, so I don't think it's a Nvidia thing. And yes, technically they aren't lying since that really is what it has. But I agree, it shouldn't be marketed like that.

The 690 actually did pretty well in most of the Titan reviews I saw when it came out, it didn't take as much of a performance hit as I thought it would, if I recall correctly. But then again...reviewers aren't exactly modding the hell out of games for their results. Most of the time though, I think the 690 does pretty well at higher res's.

I just can't see myself spending $1K more or less but around that much with only 2GB of VRAM (GTX 690).
didn't think about the Radeon 7990 aspect, good call.

not trying to start a 2GB VRAM debate but all that money for 2GB of playable VRAM to me is ridiculous.

I don't think anyone really was going after NVidia for their advertising 4GB on the 690 when its really 2x2GB.. The real culprits are the freaking marketing and sales people, as always creating BS to over-hype their products. It doesn't matter if they are working for NVidia, AMD, Intel, TIA ... etc.. they are always the ones to blame for companies lying to customers.

Exactly.

This one, the Gigabyte version is the culprit:

All the other ones are advertised as 6GB, 384-bit x2

If you're dropping $1000 on a GPU I sure hope you're going to find some reviews first

Nvidia and AMD do it, and it's mainly to get the people buying $200 graphics cards to argue about which $200 graphic card they're going to buy based on who has the better halo product.

That level of stupidity is basically why I walked away from all the reddit hardware subs and came over here. You know you're in the psuedo-enthusiast trash level when people are fighting because one person said "lol who needs 6GB of VRAM or even 4GB LEL!" and they won't admit they're morons.

Technically they're not lying, they do have that much VRAM, it's just only half as effective if you have two GPUs. But while they are telling the truth (technically), they're still deceiving people. And no AIB is going to step up and say "yes, this card has 4GB of ram but only 2GB is usable" or "yes this card has 6GB of VRAM but only 3GB is usable" because everyone else is going to be saying "hey, look at our 4GB or 6Gb card!!!!". The people who don't know better will look at that and go "gee, I wonder what's wrong with the one that only has 2GB of 3GB usable? The other ones say they have 4GB or 6GB of VRAM".

I've seen people take lowered end cards over higher end ones because the lower one had more VRAM (like a 2GB 7850 over a 1GB 7870), when they don't even know what overclocking is.

1GB 7870 vs 2gb 7850 is debatable. 1GB of VRAM at 1080p isn't enough these days.
