Cheapest Air Cooler That Cools an i3 Fanless

Thread Starter
I have an Intel i3-550, it's TDP is just below 80W under full load.

What is the cheapest cooler than I can put on if I run it fanless?

I want to run this 24/7 inside a not very well ventilated case.

Why do i want to do this? I would be banned if I told you.

Basically anything will work, stock cooler included. You can't overclock an i3 so the stock thermal load is covered by the stock cooler.

My first gen i3 can be overclocked.
I Want to run it safely at full load fanless, and the stock cooler does 80C at 2000rpm.

Actually, will those passive server heatsinks fit?

OH FANLESS. whoops didn't see that. Um, I don't know much about the matter. Basically, the heat has to go somewhere though so If you have no ventilation, a passive cooler won't do too much good. you MIGHT be able to get by with a CM Hyper 212+ without a fan, and you could definitely do it with a very low speed fan.

Edit: No, server heatsinks won't work for this. they will fit, as they are actually quite small, but servers are set up to be wind tunnels with very, very fast and loud fans at the front pushing tons of air over all of the components to the back. this includes the "passive" heatsinks, however those heatsinks are worthless if there is not an intense amount of airflow going over them.

^ Thermalright HR-02 was designed for passive operation if I remember right

First of all, I am simply astounded that this heat sink was able to successfully pass a Prime95 run at my full overclock settings with no problems and no errors
reported by Prime95, all with no active cooling on the heat sink

The caveat here is the Hr-02 is no longer for sale, HR-02 Macho is a cheapened version that comes with a fan (I'm not sure how much performance is lost)

in our fanless test, it edged past the Thermalright HR-02 Macho. Paired with a 95W CPU, it shouldn't have any trouble, assuming some system airflow is available. A fanless cooler isn't truly fanless — without some airflow passing through it, however little, even the HE02 would eventually succumb to CPU overheating. This isn't an issue we have with the HE02 specifically, but with the whole notion of passive CPU cooling: if you need to have at least one fan in a system, why not put it on the CPU heatsink where it does the most good?
