Audioengine A2 Stands

Thread Starter
I recently got myself some A2s with audioengines DS1 stands. They sound great and I am very pleased with the speakers, but they still sound a bit "boomy" on my desk because of the DS1 stands. I got someone to hold the speakers in the air, had a listen, and the A2s sounded MUCH better. I am looking for some really small desktop stands (4-6 inches) but the cheapest (and shortest) stand I could find was around $50 (ridiculous for a 4 inch stand imo).

I am interested in building my own stands but dont really know where to start. I would also be interested in buying pre made stands but modding them so that they are shorter, but cant really find anything there either.

Any input/suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Are you sure it's the stands and not the proximity to a rear wall or some other placement variable? If you have a rear wall behind them, try bunching up a towel behind them and see if that takes away the boomy sound. I've found that most any speaker will become boomy if put within a foot of a rear wall or if there is some kind of overhang on the desk.

If that makes no difference, you might also try putting cotton balls into the stand's cavity to see if that helps.

Thanks for that info, I'll definitely give it a try!

Just tried the cotton balls and they worked surprisingly well! The higher bass notes in certain songs doesn't "overpower" everything else as much...they dont sound as good as they did on proper speaker stands but I'll take this fix over stands for now.... 30 cents for cotton vs $40 for stands, I am not gonna complain lol

Thanks

You can probably improve the effect using a better material if you want to tinker; a chunk of insulation or something perhaps.
