My rig Crashes under load,Not sure why

Whats up guy's,I have been having this issue with my rig ever since i started using a different GPU last month. I bought a gtx 280 for pretty cheap,I was running the ATI HD 5770 before..
Anyways,To make a long story short,Every once in a while my computer will crash while playing a game,No BSOD,It just shuts off and won't turn back on. Usually i flip the 115v to 230v
switch on the power supply back and forth a couple times then it will start back up.This is been happening ever since i installed the new card. It takes way more power then the HD5770 did.

The processor was OC'ed to 3.5 ghz on most of the crashes,Yesterday while trying to find a higher stable overclock,I finally got it to run at 3.8 ghz on 1.4125 V. with it being stable under
stress testing for 3 hours. While having the 3.8 ghz OC,my rig crashed in game on BF3,This time the switching the power switch on the power supply didn't work.
I had to pull the motherboard battery for a couple minutes and put it back in for it to be able to boot again.

So,In a nutshell this started with the new to me gpu, Could this be happening because i don't have enough power? Like my power supply isn't up to the task of the power consumption of my rig?
I have a no name brand 700W PSU.Or do you think it's because of the overclock? I'm leaning more toward's the PSU personally,I have heard no name brand power supply's,Most of them do not have the power they advertise.

Here is what i have in my rig, To show how much stuff i'm running on 700 Watts.

- AMD Phenom II X4 955BE @ 3.5 ghz on 1.35V.
- MSI 870AG54 motherboard.
- Patriot Gamer Series 4GB DDR3 PC3 12800
- Evga GTX 280 Super clocked 1GB oc'ed at 648 mhz GPU,1154mhz Memory.
- Western Digital 1 TB 64mb black hard drive.
- LG sata 20x dl dvd burner
- Corsair H60 Water Cooling with 2 120mm fans Push/Pull configuration.
- Coolmax 700w semi modular PSU.
- Antec 300 case
- 2 140mm fans, 3 120mm fans,So 5 fan's total.
-A small LED light is also being ran.

That Coolmax PSU is a piece of crap. I wouldn't trust it to run a 300W system let alone a power hungry overclocked CPU and and older, also power hungry GPU. The fact that it has no active PFC (as noted by you switching the 115/230 switch) should be a huge indicator that you should not be using it. You are likely tripping the OCP on the extremely weak 12V rail.

Spend $75 on a good quality 550-650W PSU and enjoy your machine.

I had a feeling that it could be the weakest link in my rig,Since everything else i have pretty much is "Name Brand" other then the PSU. With what component's i am running,Should i buy a name brand 700w or what you mentioned should be enough? I am also RMA'ing my GPU, Only had it for a little while and it's artifacting.I am hoping they will take pity on me and give me a slightly newer GPU,Maybe a 560 Ti biggrin.gif

Hey,

with PSUs keep in mind that your typical "brand name" is a rebrand. Look up reviews IMO.

jonnyguru would be a good place to start.

Does this sound PSU related to you though?Like it not being up to my power consumption and just basically shutting off?

They wont give you a newer GPU, they will give you the same thing you have. Anywhoooo...

For the PSU, you can run the whole system on a 400W, probably less then. I recommend one of the following.
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/sparkle-power-supply-atx350pnb204
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/antec-power-supply-ea380dgreen
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-cx430m (although some people don't like the lower end corsairs)

But to be honest, I dont think its the PSU (change it anyways), the problem is either the motherboard, or heat. The H60 could have the possibility of not being enough for the overclock you have on there, try running a stress test, and then tell us the temps. Also check the temps of various motherboard components (you may have to download a program to tell you). Its most likely PSU related though, those crappy PSU's plaugin systems.

PS: LOVE YOUR GPU!

Several possibilities. Undetected bad ram. Run a comprehensive memory test. A flakey core in your cpu with
a system process running on it. Case in point I have a core on my athlon II x4 that runs non system process's games & apps fine
while overclocked but put a core system process on it and wham I get spurious reboots. If that's the case you can tell Windows 7 (not sure about others) process's not to use a specific core. Check into the possibility that your overtaxing your motherboard with a 125 watt CPU when you should only be running a 95 watt CPU. Separately from the CPU TDP issue some MSI motherboards had power issues in the VRM system. Not sure if the 870 based boards were part of that. Check into it. An overheated graphics card can cause that type of problem. Could be your not getting enough cool air into your power supply and it's overheating because your overtaxing it.

Based on what's happening I'm betting it's the power supply.

That's about all I can think of.

I appreciate your input,But to me running it on 400W would seem like pushing it,I would feel better running at least 550-600W quality PSU to just be on the safe side.EVGA says the minimum recommended system power would be 550W with the GTX 280.

HA, EVGA also wants you to buy their crap, ironically the minimum PSU wattage they make is 600W. Connection?
I do understand where your coming from though, so I present to you, http://pcpartpicker.com/part/rosewill-power-supply-hive650, its even modular. thumb.gif

It is almost certainly PSU related. If you have to fiddle with the PSU to get it to turn on again, you've tripped to OCP.

Here is a good PSU for a decent price in the range you want: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139028

There are a lot of them, and I don't have much time to name a list off but you should be able to find one between $50 and $75 depending on sales and such.

You will likely get something newer than the GTX 280 back from RMA though.
