1.5GB of generic Samsung vs. 1GB of Crucial Ballistix?

Thread Starter
Okay, so my current setup (AMD FX-55 in an MSI K8N-Neo2 Platinum) has 1.5GB of RAM in 4 sticks -- 2 x 512, and 2 x 256 -- of OEM Samsung RAM.

I've had it for a little over a year, but as of now I haven't OC'd anything, not even the FX-55. I'm just now starting to read up on how to do this stuff, and want to push my system harder for faster Battlefield 2 and other newer games, and faster loading in general.

Meanwhile, my buddy is building a PC that will basically just be used for word processing and multimedia, and he picked up a gig (2 x 512) of Crucial Ballistix PC3200. I know that it has 2-2-2-6 timings and heatspreaders and all, so it's more than he needs. Needless to say, we're negotiating a deal where he may take my Samsung RAM and I'll take his Ballistix for my gaming PC.

But I'm wondering if this is the way to go. Would I find improvement going to the higher performance RAM, even though I'm dropping from 1.5GB to 1GB? Or should I stick with my 1.5GB?

Similarly, looking to eventually add more, I see that Ballistix PC3200 is only available in 512 sticks... no 1GB sticks. So with 4 DIMM slots, the most I can ever get is 2GB, while with the OEM Samsung, I could get 3 to 4GB (pricewise, realistically 3GB max, adding two 1GB sticks in place of the 256's). In that case, how would 3GB of Samsung (2x1GB + 2x512) compare to 2GB of Ballistix (4x512)?

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, for overclocking, you will see a big inprovement. For running things, IMO what you have is the way to go if you are staying at stock.

ya i would totally just stick with one gig four sticks or ram and then mixing on top is no good but stock maybe ok if you want to overclock go crucial!

For the best overclocking/stability, you'll want to have the 1T command rate that only running 2 sticks can give you.

However, you'll get better real-world performance, especialy in newer games, with 1.5 gig, even if it is mixed and matched with a 2T command rate.

I would trade, like you said, if you were to get more ram, you wouldn't need the 2*256's anyway. I think the quality of the ram is more important than the quantity any day. My friend has 2*512 sticks of good 3200, and I let him borrow my 2*1Gb sticks of no name ram for a few minutes, and his 3d mark 06 score dropped 100 points or so. Lastly, then if you wanted to get more ram, you can just get other good over clocking ram in 1Gb sticks. Correct me if I am wrong, but the brand doesn't matter as much as the timings and such.

Edit- Also please fill in your system specs, this way you dont have to repeat everything next time you have a question.
Edit- Thank You.

Trade - its only a small drop in the amount, it'll overclock better, it'll be faster due to the timings

If it was 3x512 then that might be better depending on what you use your computer for. If you use alot of RAM then that extra 512MB might be worth it over 1T and dual-channel. But since your using 4 sticks of RAM I would stick with the 2x512, it will run at 1T and dual-channel and makes overclocking and benchmarking a bit easier.

Ballistix DDR400 is still available in 2x1G sets as is there DDR500.... find them is a bit difficult though.
But.... these should work well...

Thanks for the heads-up on the system specs... I filled in everything I could remember from work.

I DO plan on OC'ing, especially once I get my temps down. My FX-55 has always run warm -- 48 degrees C idle, 60+ load. I no longer have the sides on my case and let my cool basement air help my cause... with the sides on it was a furnace in there and I couldn't get the temps down, even with Arctic Silver 5 and a well-reviewed HS/Fan (can't remember the model off-hand).

I've thought of mounting a 120mm fan on the side panel, lining it up with the CPU fan, and see if the double-fan (intake or out) helps.

Anyway, once I can get my CPU to run cool enough, I'm definitely ready to OC. So it sounds like overclocking a gig of Ballistix will be better than overclocking 1.5GB of OEM Samsung.

That said, can I mix? Can I keep 1.5GB by doing 2x512 Ballistix + 2x256 of Samsung? Or will that make it worse? Sorry, I'm a longtime PC buff but fairly new at this particular stuff.

Your not gonna be able to run dual channel with the setup you have. I would go with to 512MB sticks.
