1.5GB of generic Samsung vs. 1GB of Crucial Ballistix? - Page 4

Lol, didn't even have to read through the manual like I normally do.

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/produc...il.php?UID=607

If their double sided (which they almost definitely will be - I'll check) then it'll limit the speed - they'll run at 166mhz instead of 200mhz

This discussion is skewed O_o...

1.5GBS of RAM will beat 1 gb of RAM in games, no matter what basically as long as you are using the extra RAM, which most games will do. It doesnt matter how fast you can put info onto the 1 gb stick, you can put just alot more onto the 1.5gb's which like I said, is better.

Great - thanks for that. I read that stuff when I got the motherboard, but never really grasped what all of it meant. I have a better understanding now.

I'll probably go ahead with the 2x512 of Ballistix and then decide how to upgrade down the line. At the very least I'll get some experience with OC'ing, which should be fun...

So what comes of "speed > amount"? Is that just not true?

I think regardless I'll go with the Ballistix... yeah, for a while I'll be 512MB short of where I am now, but once I do decide to upgrade, 2GB of OC'd Ballistix should kick the crap out of 2GB of OEM Samsung. Biggest difference is cost...

Well said MOV

Only a few games 'need' 2GB of RAM, and those which do will run perfectly fine even with 'only' 1GB - especially with his processor and graphics card

Good luck MOV, and let us know how you get on

I cant agree with this due to you would not be in dual channel mode with 1.5gb set. You may have more memory but your ram has only a 1 lane highway while a dual channel kit has a 3 lane highway.

Plus whats better the bigger guy who runs a 40 in 6 seconds or the smaller guy who runs it in 4 seconds...

Hmm... thinking down the line a bit, and have one more question. Which would be better?

#1....
2GB (4x512) of PC3200 Ballistix.... obviously high-end performance RAM, but since it's running in all 4 DIMMs, my motherboard only runs it at DDR333...

or #2.....
2GB (2x1GB) of more basic PC3200 RAM (i.e. Corsair ValueSelect or G.SKILL).... it's not the high-end RAM like the Ballistix, but if only running 2 DIMMs it will run at the full DDR400...

Besides being about $50 cheaper, #2 runs at DDR400.... though #1, even though at DDR333, is the extreme/faster RAM. I don't know which is more important or has a bigger effect... Would there be much of a difference?

Performance wise your better off with the two 1gb due to the AMD memory controller not liking four sticks it would be a performance hit. I say just save up a bit and get a decent set of 2x1gb. Something like Mushkin Redline XP4000, G.SKill HZ, Ballistix, and I think there are some decent Firestix?
