or #2.....
2GB (2x1GB) of more basic PC3200 RAM (i.e. Corsair ValueSelect or G.SKILL).... it's not the high-end RAM like the Ballistix, but if only running 2 DIMMs it will run at the full DDR400...

Besides being about $50 cheaper, #2 runs at DDR400.... though #1, even though at DDR333, is the extreme/faster RAM. I don't know which is more important or has a bigger effect... Would there be much of a difference?

Get 2x1GB or 4x512MB it doesn't matter, but get good ram. I have OCZ Technology OCZ600512ELPE Ram. It's amazing. PC4800, DDR 600, 2.5-4-4-10 Stock Timings, 512MB Sticks, Enhanced Latency, Limited Edition Platinum Edition. I have 4x512MB sticks of it running at 2-4-4-10 timings and it's super fast. Do not cheap out on ram, get really good $200-300 ram.
Linkage:
2GB of OCZ Platinum DDR 400
2GB of G. Skill DDR 500 HZ
2GB of mushkin eXtreme DDR 500
All of those options are 2x1GB but 4x512 is fine, too.
512MB of Crucial Ballistix DDR500
512MB of Corsair XMS DDR 400

And deciding between 1.5GB of Generic or 1GB of Crucial Ballistix, anyday, I'd go with the Crucial, with the timings they can get it'll out proform any 1.5GB generic ram. 2.5-4-4-8 timings can be dropped to 2-4-4-8 which is super fast, and, you can upgrade to 2GB later on.

Hmm... advice is also good, but thanks anyway.

Ah, thank you. That's what I was looking for.

I prefer to make an educated decision rather than "just picking one".

The memory will slow down if you have four sticks, as I showed you earlier in a link, so I don't get why your still thinking about four sticks???

Id say pick up the Crucial 2X512 DDR500 or Crucial 2X1GB DDR500 modules just for the fact that you can tighten the timings sooo much when you run them at DDR400! My mobo picked it up at 2-2-2-8@2T but I am running it at 2-2-2-5@1T.

Right, I got that, I know that 4 sticks will run slower... but that's what raised this issue.... Would four sticks of the HIGH performance RAM (i.e. Ballistix) slow down enough (running at DDR333) to be slower than 2 sticks of "normal" RAM (i.e. ValueSelect) running at the full DDR400?

Basically I guess it comes down to whether the timings of the high performance RAM outweigh the fact that it would be running at DDR333... or conversely, if the slower timings and cheaper cost of ValueSelect-range RAM are canceled out by the fact that it can run at DDR400.

If it was simply 4 sticks versus 2, I'd be set... but unfortunately cost is also an issue, so I wasn't sure if the high-performance timings of 4 sticks would make up for the fact that was running slower than 2 sticks.

as stated above, Amds memory controller sucks at running 4 sticks, high performance or valueselect ram it doesnt matter. Your best bet is 2X512MB or 2X1GB matched set. Mixing and matching ram may bring up stability issues for obvious reasons.

Yeah, I definitely won't be mixing; I'd like to find a good set of 2x1GB that I can afford (something in trade for the 2x512 Ballistix I'm getting from my buddy... I'll be using the Ballistix for the next several months, and maybe trade down the line), and then it looks like I'll be set.

Cool, thanks. Exactly what I needed to know. The high-performance timings on the Ballistix won't make up for the fact that it's running slower with 4 sticks. All good now, thanks.

Nope

4 sticks = 2T, 333mhz
2 sticks = 1T, 400mhz

You'll find that 2 sticks are much faster, even if the 4 sticks have lower latencies

May just want to buy a new system. A C2D rig will be a little costly, but the performance would rock yours...
