965 BE Overclock...cannot troubleshoot instability

Hi all. I have a 965 that I, right off the start, put at 4 Ghz with 100% stability for months. Recently, I've tried to edge it up to 4.1 and cannot get stability. So I went back down to 4.0 Ghz... and now it's Charles Manson unstable... At 3.9 I get longer stability, but once in a while, still get the BSOD.

m5a97 r2.0
965 BE X4 Phenom
Corsair 1600 Mhz DDR3
Air cooled by Max Orb with a door fan helping increase air speed
Temps hold at Max around 52.
NB is 2400 Mhz (and seems stable on Prime95)

Monitor logs are showing it's crashing at 47C CPU at 1.44Vcore. (Min is 1.08V, Max is 1.452V)

RAM tests with Prime95 are 100% stable, even when I OC to 1800Mhz (!Which I am not doing currently, just as a test).

Everything was on Auto. I've tried bumping up the Vcore all the way to 1.52, which did maybe gave me 1 more minute before BSOD, though that may be an imaginary minute. Right after booting to Desktop it usually crashes. I put it back down to Auto at stock.

So the RAM can take some OC. The NB can take OC. The FSB can take OC. The CPU will run stable at 3.7Ghz currently. I cannot understand why it's suddenly bucking at 4.0Ghz, especially with more cooling.

A) Shouldn't I be able to attain 4.1 Ghz with cooling and voltage? Or is that just a pipe dream.

B) How can I get it stable again at 4.0 Ghz? It wasn't overheated at any time and no other changes.

I have Load Line on, with the Digi+ Power in the middle range to give me some flexibility at the expense of efficiency.

Appreciate any help!

Hi.
Do a Clear CMOS, and reapply the OC settings.
EDIT.
Don't go bumping around voltages. Small steps. Always.

The max voltage I got was doing minimal steps each reboot after BSOD. At 1.5+ I got nervous and stopped, plus the temps were climbing quick. I can't imagine it needing a difference in 1.42Vcore at 3.9 and 1.5+ with no stability at 4Ghz.

BTW, will clearing CMOS do anything? I can imagine that changing anything, but I don't really know. Is there a theory behind this? (I apologize if it seems I'm questioning you, but I'm trying to understand the problem)

I'm trying to get 4 ghz out of my 955 BE,Haven't quite found the right configuration. What are your settings for a 4 ghz OC? I tried just upping the multiplier and bumping the voltage to 1.45 V. I got BSOD after 5 minutes on a stability test. Is that not enough voltage? Sorry not trying to thread hi jack. But we have similar chips and are shooting for the same goal.

The best i could do was 3.8 ghz with running 3 hours of stability testing. But my PSU doesn't like the OC and my GPU,I think my PSU is holding me back from achieving 4 ghz.Maybe i need to run a lower multiplier with higher FSB.

From what I've read and experienced it can be tricky to push the 965BE to 4+ Ghz, let alone on air. Personally I haven't been able to hit 4Ghz stable for long without cutting it too close for comfort with the temps, but I think for me personally it has to do with the LLC and lack-there-of offset control for my motherboard.

Thanks for the guides. I've read those and doesn't change a lot. The closest thing I can find that may be the problem is that the CPU load jumps right before it dumps... but it does that at other times with no problem. Might be a false positive.

I'll try getting a new cooler to cool it down more, maybe that will help
