Core 2 Duo with 17" screen for $100

Thread Starter
Will my parents are looking to upgrade from a 3.0ghz p4 with 2gb of ram and a 250gb hdd to a core 2 duo at 2.13ghz with 1gb or ram and an 80gb hdd.

now the p4 was mint 13 on it

where as the c2d has windows xp and a bunch of programs from the seller such as photoshop and possible adobe flash and, it comes with a 17" screen.

so is this upgrade worth it or is it a rip off?
That is just dumb. I understand financial burdens and all, but that thing is a disaster waiting to happen.

What do your parents do on the PC?

Not really worth cracking the case for that IMHO.Spend 250 and build an AMD APU. It will actually edit movies and you can watch HD. Assuming you can reuse the hdd if it is SATA.

Hmmm I would look at maybe upgrading the CPU and maybe trying to stick more ram in there.

My big concern about the other unit is 1GB of ram is just terrible, and an 80GB HDD sounds like it would be the type of hard drive that would die in a few months.

I agree with you whole heartily, you should go new with parts. What exactly do you have in your old pc as far as case, power supply, hard drive(Sata or what). If you can reuse any of it, theres some good deals on newegg like a case + power supply for 20-30 new. Also check the the combo deals and you can find a htcp build for less than 100$ (sometimes a hardrive as well for a few more $) or less with cpu, ram, motherboard( nothing great but anything new will smoke a p4 imo). Look for a board + cpu combo with integrated graphics and your set if you can reuse your hard drive here is current deal for a AMD build http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138365 that isnt great but come with a warranty! Here is another "higher end" deal http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1245723 Atlas the link to the 3 item combo deal page http://www.newegg.com/Store/ComboDeals.aspx?ComboStoreID=244&name=Save-Now!-3-Items-Combo

If you must have intel you will spend a little more and come up with less in graphics but usually a better cpu IMO but its you choice. i hope this helps

Note: forgot about the screen um ebay? or open box micro center?

micro center, dont have those in the great white north

and my parents are old fansion, as in the internet is a bad place to buy stuff.

on the harddrive issue it should be good the computers past owner was general dynamics but, if it does fail its a sata drive that can be upgraded.

and the old case is a dell dimensions 3000 only thing in it worth taking is a 9800

I got my Core 2 Duo rig for free. At $100, that seller is completely ripping you off. I'd say $50-60 at most, considering it comes with a monitor. All the parts that are in that thing are throw away parts these days (obviously). 1GB of RAM is absolutely horrible too, I have 2GB and its bad. Also, the XP is a huge concern as well, I'd want at least 7 or Kubuntu on there personally. And 80GB hard drives.....they haven't made those (as far as I know) for years now. It's hard to find a 250GB drive for cheap these days, since 500GB ones are only like $1-2 more.
