Thread Starter
hi, i have about a 1500 budget and im looking to build myself a decent AMD X2 rig, heres what im thinking, any type of help would be nice, looks like ill be buying from newegg and tigerdirect

Mother board- 570 chip set and said vista compatible, it looked fairly decent
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128014

CPU- im in serious need of multi tasking performance, i useually have many things open at once
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103751

RAM- they told me there ram was compatible with all gigabyte mobos
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098

videocard/s
2X 7600gt running in SLi
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...931185&CatId=0

or

just one of these bad boys 7950GT, would like know which set up is better/faster
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...769&CatId=1826

Sound Card- i love my music i need atleast decent sound, might get a 5500 logitech system in the near future
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...687632&CatId=0

HD-160-250 gigs is plenty for me
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822144129

PSU-680W hope it will b enough
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817148022

Case- i rely need good cooling
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811196021
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811103010

and some dvd dual layer cdrw combo drive beast of a thing haha

im planning to get vista upgrade soon after i get a new rig. Im mainly going to use this for long hours of games or web/graphic design, alot of music, watching movies and such stuff. like i said im on a budget of 1500 so im just trying to get the fastest machine for my needs. After playing around with this P4 and fx5200 with 512mb of ram for a few years i am rely getting tired of the slowness. Also i was planning about mabe overclocking this rig just a lil bit, nothing to big, i need it to stay stable, and last a very long time.

thanks

Get ready for the GO Conroe flood!

If your planning on OCing the X2 4200+ should OC just as well for less $$$

The other thing, your actually better of with 1 more powerful vid card...
The 7950GT a better choice

Check out this case

Yep, I would also suggest a 4200 X2. $50 cheaper and can overclock just as high.

You might want to look at this board, its a great board but more expensive then the Gigabyte.

so if i do get the 4200 x2 it will overclock as well as the 4600 x2, as in they will both perform at the same speeds with the same stablility? i rely dont want to overclock if it means sacraficing my cpus life span, i need it to last 4 years atleast

also that case, the fans are located in the front, will it cool the mother board jus as well or better as if they wer located on the side? will the HD bay b an obstacle in the way for good cooling? specially if im going to overclock a 4200, how ever i do like the idea of mounting the PSU on the bottom and having the exhaust fan on top since hot air tends to rise.

and one more question, that board is twice the cash >< with 1 7950 will i rely need a 590 chipset? and im guessing i might also have to go grab some more expensive ram for it to work properly? i dont know if i can get board it might put me 50-100$ over

thanks

I would wait for Q1 of 2007 for Amd's 65nm processors. Also, C2D is still the better option here - (though I hate saying that, I am kinda an Amd fanboy - especially since you want it to last 4 years which I don't know if it can. Also, wait for direct x 10 (Q1 of 2007 too - With Windows Vista) if you count on it lasting 4 years. You might also consider to wait for K8L. (I think this is right)

A moderate OC which will surpass the X2 4600+ will not effect the life span any relavant amount provided you keep the full load temps below 50c. That
core can safelly run x2 5000+ speeds just fine for a many years which amounts to a conservitave

Extreme max OCing, on the other hand will have far more effect!

hmm so 4200 X2 the way to go? will that giganto side fan b enough cooling or will i need to also upgrade to one of those full copper heat sinks that will some wat run me 40$ and make it cost the same as the 4600 :/, and ya im somewat an AMD fan boy to, ive had nothing but problems with these funny powerbands these intel processors are giving me, and useing my friends AMD machines have converted me to there side lmao

and do u happen to know wen those 65nm processors will b comming out? and the price? i am on a 1500$ budget and im pretty sure ill have to order up and entirely new rig to run a 65nm and im gonna guess it will cost a nice sum.

and one more question, can all computers run Vista? or only certain motherboards like ive been seen advertiseing alot

For that price you can get an opteron 170. Actually it's only $199.

You won't have to buy a new Mobo to run the 65nm... just get a good nForce 570 or nForce 590 board...

My board (Asus M2N32-Deluxe) and my X2 4200 run really fast and pretty cool considering the horrible airflow I have... I run at 42C full load both cores in Orthos and all I have is Freezer 64 Pro, and all my airflow is a 1 or 2 80mm in my PSU and a horrible 120mm rear fan... after I add a few higher CFM 120mm fans I bet you I'll be running around 35C load and that's un-lapped...

We're talking AM2 Here

And again, seriously, The Core 2 Duo is the much better option. Don't even think about comparing it with the previous generation Intels, since it's a totally different CPU. It beats anything AMD has to offer right now, and for that budget, you can build a great Core 2 Duo rig. Plus, the Core 2 Duo overclocks like insanity (a 1GB overclock is pretty much average....). You did say fastest machine for your need

Figuring out a better AM2 rig for you though... there are some issues with your picks, like an IDE hard drive
