Newbie to programming, looking for cool things

Hi guys, I took a programming class in high-school and nearly forgot everything from then. Now I'm beginning to want to get back into it. I'm particularly looking for interesting ideas to undertake from programming. Like in high-school, I made my way into making a calculator app in Visual Studio 2012, but now have no ideas. I know this probably sounds uninteresting but here goes...

Basically, one of my main focuses here is to try to make a complete RPG game system, kind of like Dungeons and Dragons rules set, set to drive (put game name here.) If anyone can help me with this, all I am looking for is just some tips and tricks really.

Again, like the title says, as it stands I'm just a newbie at programming but REALLY want to try to get something finished (for right now, with just Visual Studio) but futuristically, I'm going to want to delve into C++ and C#. If anyone can point me to any great examples of usages of these codes that I can use as a learning resource, I will be grateful + REP. Thanks guys.

If you are interested in focusing more on game programming I'd say grab an XNA 4.0 book and work through it with C#. We used it for a game programming class I took at K-State and was fairly easy to pick up. Will help you get the general concepts down. Not really sure about the direction that Microsoft is going with XNA in the future but the skills will translate to other languages.

In that one semester class we made a platformer, tower defense and RPG (think Final Fantasy). It was alot of fun and there are also some great examples/tutorials online as well.

Alright I will try to look into that. Right now, I'm not necessarily familiar with any language in specific, it all boils down to what works the best for me right now. Anything I can work up a standard rule-set or something of the likes will do. Right now, I just want to get working on something though, because I got tons of ideas I want to implement, but the most difficult part obviously is implementing them. So long as I can get something that works, I will be happy smile.gif

Once you get some programming basics done, you should try some mobile programming. Programming for Android is pretty easy, and there are a lot of bootstraps for it
