Overclocking Fx 8120 on an Asus M5a78L-M Usb3 motherboard problems

Hello. A month i bought a new psu which i thought it will let me to safely overclock my cpu. I managed to reach a stable 4.1 ghz using the multiplier method and monitoring with hwmonitor during prime95 stress tests. Every worked good while using the pc for non gaming activities. Now the problem: while playing any game i observed huge fps and gpu usage drops at random moments which disappear after 10-15 seconds. At first i thought it happened because of my old psu which was cheap and old. but after returning my cpu to stock speed the problem didnt occur anymore.

How could overclocking the cpu affect gpu usage ? Is it because of the cpu, mobo or what? I hope i can resolve this issue to fully use my cpu. Also the motherboard doesnt have voltage control option in the bios. Can i modify that using other programs ? Thanks:thumb:

That mobo is not really design for any FX chip or any ocing.

EDIT
Which Prime95 are you using?

the version is 25.11

i got that board and you wont even be overclocking, the vrms are not heatsinked and soon as they get hot they will throttle voltage and frequency!

plus the board has a 4+1 phase design. youll be lucky to keep that combination alive tbh.

i talk from pure experience, get a new board. dont overclock.

if you dont want to get a new board, i highly recommend modding the vrms with heatsinks and a fan.

i done this mod and was able to get a 5ghz for benches and about 4.7 stable, but it only reduces the time it takes to throttle.

yes the board has voltage and LLC control, its called cpu overvoltage.

im actually using this board now and will never overclock it again with any cpu. and i would not in a million years put an 8core with it.

I understand, but the baffling part is the fact that the cpu doesnt throttle due to overclocking but the gpu does. Also, as i recently bought the psu and i dont have any money left for other upgrades, cant i buy just a vrm heatsink instead ?

Here you go
p95v277.zip 4562k .zip file

And Here is the FX patchs for windows 7 too.
FX patches.zip 4637k .zip file

Now watch the mobo throttle the hell out of that cpu under stress load.
I had a 4100 stock speed with turbo off with that mobo too and that mobo throttle the hell out of the 4100 under load.

haha i got a 4100 on it and at stock full load im about 3300mhz on a core every second.

i know youre out of money OP but think of it this way, what would you rather upgrade a new board or possibly cpu and board if it blows.

and prime does work for FX chips just that they didnt have to do much to the code because bulldozer architecture is so alike. its even on there website. (obviously not in those words)

and you have to set prime to use 100%cpu usage i forgotten what its called but you have to enter 10 instead of 1

The new code is going to be higher load wattage vs the older ones on the FX chips.

So indeed it was my prime95 version who gave me misleading data. Indeed it throttles when TMPIN0 reaches 57 degrees.

Is it safe then to use it at stock clocks but with turbo and cool & quiet turned on ? And a probably stupid question : does gpu overlocking is affected by this situation ?

I would say Yes, but remember it will still throttle the cpu on loads and most games too.
