AMD Phenom 2 x4 955 BE - Can't get above 3.8 GHz - Need help :)

Hi everyone!

I'm new to this forum.

Lately I've been trying to stream online gaming. It was decent.. I had a tad too low fps though, and I read that It was because the game is very CPU intensive (I'm playing RIFT online)
So I thought I'd need to OC my CPU.

I generally ran at 3.8 GHz with decent temps, but I just can't seem to get it above 3.8 GHz.

What I've been doing so far is trying to increase the Vcore. When I was playing before, I had it set to 1.500 and the temps were decent.

Here's my rig:

HAF MINI Coolermaster
AMD phenom 2 x4 955 BE 3.2 GHz stock (3.8GHz OC'd)
MSI GTX 660 ti PE (not OC'd)
3 x 2 GB ram. (turns out I have 2 corsair 1 and kingston)
Asus M4A79T Deluxe
750W Corsair PSU
silver arrow sb-e (not sure if this is a good or bad CPU cooler)

I've included a few Screenshots to help you guys indentify my rig:

I want to try reach 4.0 GHz or 4.2GHz

Generally I've only played a little with the multiplier and the vcore in bios.
I've read countless guides on this, and they all seem to have different approches to overclocking.. People mainly tell me that I just need to adjust my multiplier to my liking, and then adjust the vcore afterwards..

I tried to do so, I could reach 3.8GHz stable with vcore 1.500 running Prime95
At this point, I tried to reach 3.9GHz. But I get BSoD. So I thought, hey! It might be because I've added too little voltage (despite it being 1.500, i thought it seemd a little high, but my temps were fine) So I added a little more to it, still with no succes, instant BSoD when I hit go on Prime95.

After I've played around with it a little I got tired and frustrated.. My new CM STORM TRIGGER keyboard started to malfunction, the power completely shuts off the keyboard occansionally, and comes back a few seconds after (what could have been the cause of this??)

Anyway! I hope this post isn't hurting your eyes to read, I'm not so used to making forum threads myself, I usually just lurk around and try to gather as much information as possible, but it seems the majority of people do it so different, or have different setups..

So I'm hoping you guys can help me smile.gif
If you need any kind of information, I will try to supply it, however, I'm leaving for work in 30 min and will be able to check back on this thread in about 7 hours.

TL;DR - I want to try reach high CPU GHz, but I get BSoD.

3.8ghz is reaching towards the top of its oc ability. I have seen 4.0ghz but generally heat is a big issue at this speed. I had two 955's and neither would go over 3.8ghz.

My temps reach 50 C* on all 4 when I run prime95 with 3.8 GHz.

Shouldn't I be able to do 4GHz with this CPU then? Or?

Thanks for the reply

And is there any significant FPS gains in MMORPGs from 3.8 to 4.0 GHz?

with that board and cpu cooler - you should be able to reach 4.

here is a guide . . .

make sure you've got good airflow in your case.

Thank you, I will take a look at this while at work:)

Will post here if I have further questions regarding this.

Can you tell me why my FPS is so low? I just tried playing rift again without streaming, and it seems random everytime I start the game if I will get good FPS or bad FPS..
I was playing with medium settings and got roughly 35 fps, is this really supposed to be that low?

thanks in advance.

I would say the video card. I play WOW and GW2 and I have a HD6970. I get around the same on Utlra settings at 1920x1080, so I set it at high or medium until my HD7950 comes today.

I really doubt it's the graphic card that is the problem here.

Based on these benchmarks it can reach up to 118.5 fps on ultra on 1900 x 1200 4xAA

I've read the guide you linked me a few times. But it's like every other guide I read, I seem to not understand it properly..

Am I to OC my ram and other things before I OC my CPU? And is this gonna do me any good?

For a few days ago I tried to set priority in my task manager, so rift would have high priority. This seemed to help the fps a lot, I would reach roughly 120 fps on medium settings and 60-80 fps on ultra settings.. If I do this now however, It doesn't change a thing.

Would it help to formate the PC and start all over again? Despite the fact that I formated my PC for a few weeks ago.

Some chips just won't do 4.0 There are a lot of great guides, but I think its optimistic numbers that always get passed around here as the "norm". A lot of people will say 4-4.2 for PII but thats really only the case for Thubans, to be regularly that good anyway. I find Denebs usually hit a wall @3.8 like yourself and me and only some will go beyond. And even then, it usually requires impressive cooling and high volts.

I didn't find it worth the temps. I dropped mine back from 4.0 to 3.8 just to be safe. Doesn't make any kind of real difference, and it runs much cooler, and quieter.

Good luck with the OC

Thank you very much for the reply smile.gif Nice to see people still online on this forum at these times.

I've uploaded a picture of me playing RIFT. On the very bottom right, you can see my FPS, and the top left will show my CPU Status.
As you can see, the temperature is pretty low, and I'm running at roughly 3.7 GHz right now.

The game doesn't seem to fully utilize my CPUs power, is there any way to change this? I've gone ahead and went into task manager and changed to priority of rift.exe to high. This didn't change a thing.

Sorry for the bad screenie, I don't know hot to leave out the black frames.

Based on this screenshot, I've sort of concluded that it's not that I need an OC, but just a CPU or GPU optimization.. I think it's CPU related.

Okay it seems a bit difficult to see any details on the screen shot:

Temperature on all 4 cores are at 24.0 *C
FPS in game is 35 fps.
