Dude, he used the FX/i7 as a base for the question of who is better? Is that review only valid because Gentoo can be tailored from the ground up?

The next paragraph is completely unrelated, where he actually states the question he has. He wants to know if Xeon or Opteron would be better off his workload, using the i7/FX article as a baseline for the reasoning behind the question.

Don't have to be snobby about it, thought it was a pretty obvious and up front question.

Considering both AMD and Intel server platforms share architecture with their desktop counterparts your argument is invalid. The only difference is chipset and the IMC generally. Occasionally some experimental advanced virtualization features... Granted more cores... And less clock speed.

and two QPI links so you can run dual socket. In a server environment, that's the norm. Find me one hosting company that offers the 3770 instead of an E5 or two.

At any rate; desktop benchmarks are still relevant to same generation server counterparts. Performance should be relatively proportionate, maybe not exactly, but fairly close. That said, depending on your workload (virtualization vs bare metal, single vs multi threaded) one platform or the other will win. There isn't really a clear winner in all cases.

Actually that is a very good point. The program we use IS very very memory intensive. In fact we will need 3x more memory per core. So if we have ~ 32 cores we will need ~ 90 gigs of ram.
