Looks like the end of evolving P6 micro-arch. It looks like it turbos the same as IB, so this might be a real clock for clock comparison. I'd me more interested to see a test done with turbo disabled completely, I highly doubt Intel left turbo boost alone when Haslel's main target is mobile.

However this is why AMD did not keep evolving K10. There is only so much you can do with an architecture once it's been refined, and I'm guessing that gaining performance becomes exponentially more difficult the more you evolve a micro arch. Had AMD kept the same micro-arch for this long, we'd be seeing the same rate of change. From what I've read from the little information that's out about Haslel, it sounds like it's just "lets make some things wider" and "lets put some things that aren't on the CPU into the CPU, MOAR SOC-LIKE!" I guess AMD has MOAR COARS and Intel has MOAR STUFF ON CPU DIE

It leaves me wondering what Intel is going to do after this. It is quite clear there's no room left to improve P6 derived micro-architectures anymore. The only new architectures Intel has really brought forth since then are:

1. Itanium: failure
2. Netburst: failure
3. old Atom: failure
4. new Atom: shows promise but unproven.

Maybe Intel will drop P6 derived architectures in the future and instead scale up Atom? But new Atom is modelled more like AMD modules than traditional cores.
Either way I expect another 3% to 5% out of a shrink from Broadwell and that's the next two years of Intel performance increase. We can talk about laptop and BS like that all day long, but in the end of the day the chip tested is a desktop chip and that's what we're here for.

Regardless Intel is clearly in a position where they're forced to add things irrelevant to performance to try and add value. If this chip was only designed for mobiles, it would only be released on mobiles. Intel is clearly doing their best here, because they're releasing an enthusiast grade unlocked Haslel CPU.

this is going to help drive Desktop PC sales down lower and lower, not sure who this is really meant for.

I just upgraded from my Phenom 955 to a 2600k too. Looks like I'll have no real incentive to upgrade to Haswell once I get the new chip under water.

While some may take this as bad news; as a LONG-time pc enthusiast I'm actually glad to see it. This really is the beginning of a new epoch in hardware, one in which the stupendous improvements of yesteryear are finally over. Back in 2000-2006, every new generation / iteration of hardware was seeing at least about 20% improvements in some metric. That and everything was changing, constantly, all the time. Moving from DDR-DDR2, IDE-SATA, AGP-PCIE, etc, it was a constant juggle to keep a fast machine together, with the unfortunate early obsolescence of parts due to interface formfactor changes.

I'd say that since the introduction of Core 2, the easy hardware performance gains have been coming to an end. Lithography is reaching it's theoretical maximum limits; and CPUs can only scale so much. Now we're in the era of slow, incremental change. It's gonna be nice to have a machine built today that's still relevant in 2015... wink.gif
