But what I hate is everyone comparing games that are different simply because it's in a genre..It's the same as people comparing Battlefield and Call of Duty..The same as those comparing every MMORPG in the world to WOW. It's utterly stupid. Not saying any of those games are bad, but I'd prefer people give better reasons than..The games just like wow..boring..
I would argue that there's quite a bit more similar with many modern games than things like "does it use a standard UI with spells on the bottom of the screen." Developers are constantly taking every idea currently used in the genre and implementing it into their own games. How many modern MMOs use daily quests as a means to get players to log in more every day? How many offer as a means of leveling up, areas meant for specific level ranges where you complete menial tasks such as "kill 10 of these" or "gather 8 of those" mostly solo until you hit the cap? Upon hitting the cap, how many offer content where you repeat instanced content for the best equipment in the game, until the next expansion when new content with new equipment is released? I could go on and on, but the point is that while some players may compare just for the sake of comparing (and I find nothing wrong with that anyway really), if players find that most MMOs today feel the same it might be for a reason.
For example, I've never played or looked into Rift, but considering that it is a modern MMO, I wouldn't be surprised if it has dailies, or "kill x of these" and "gather y of those" quests. I wouldn't be surprised if it has simplistic tiered loot like "greens" and "blues." I wouldn't be surprised if you can solo to cap in a few weeks of casual playing. It might not have all of these features, but it may have others that make it eerily similar to other games (I bet it has at least 2 or 3 features I mentioned though
