Are you gonna build it or are you gonna buy a complete build? And is he gonna overclock? Also, does he got a HDD already or does he need to buy a new one? And is he gonna buy a SSD?

Here's a rough guide, your original question wasn't very specific. This will be a beast rig for 1080p gaming.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor (£166.99 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (£24.49 @ CCL Computers)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard (£99.98 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£51.99 @ Dabs)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (£49.25 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 XT 2GB Video Card (£194.40 @ Amazon UK)

Power Supply: Fractal Design Tesla R2 500W 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V Power Supply (£64.99 @ Dabs)
Total: £712.09

Feel free to swap out the case for something else, that's really down to personal preference.

I would choose these things;
Case: Corsair Obsidian 350D - 94,99£
MB: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 - 109,99£
CPU: Intel i5-3570K 3.4GHz - 175,99£
GPU: EVGA GTX 660 FTW 3GB - 189,95£
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz - 55,99£
PSU: Corsair GS 600W 80+ Bronze - 66,95£

Total: 693,86 £

Edit: Also, if you are looking to overclock, I would recommend you to buy a Cooler Master 212 EVO. Its really great and very cheap too. You could also look into a cheaper case too.

To start you off:

CPU - Intel 3570K - £171.97 Inc Delivery
Motherboard - ASRock Z77 Extreme4-M - £90.17 Inc Delivery
RAM - G.SKILL RipjawsX 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz - £49.30 Inc Delivery

Cooler depends on how much you are looking to overclock that CPU, a budget cooler like the 212+ or Nh-D14 / Phanteks PH-TC14PE. Majority of the budget will go towards the GPU, if you can possibly get a SSD as well.

MSI Overclocked Radeon HD 7950 AMD Graphics Card - 3GB £226.55 - LINK

It comes with 3 games which you could likely sell and effectively get the 7950 as the same price as the 7870 that AndyM95 posted. thumb.gif

EDIT:

Oops double post redface.gif

Here's another where you get Crysis 3 and Bioshock Infinite for FREE: XFX AMD Radeon 7950 HD 800MHz 3GB PCI-Express 3.0 HDMI £220 Inc delivery (I think)
