FX-8350 can't run Prime95 @ Stock Settings. - Page 4

im testing atm. i only use prime and if i dont make it to 4.8ghz i know anything below is rock solid. (on air tho)

remember to set cpu priority. in the test tab - worker windows. recommended priority is 10 but your system will be purely stressed with prime and no other resources, 8 allows third party monitoring.

a lot of people also forget that prime and other software can conflict leading to what seems to be instability. hence theres articles on how to set prime up and best stress testing methods.

Hey, sorry to drop in suddenly. But is there a link on that setting up Prime and others? Help would be much appreciated. (Stable overnight in P95 10+ hours, F@H ok, but 2 or 3 crashes on FAHcore today and yesterday.... strange.)

No problem! Glad your here.

Crashing while Folding is how I ended up starting this thread in the first place. d1nky's mention of changing cpu priority is the first mention I've seen in years. On countless systems over the last 3-4 years, I've never done more than the following...

1. Download appropriate version from here.

2. Right click the .zip file and hit "extract". I extract mine to a folder named Prime95 in the Windows Program Files folder.

3. Right click on the Application and click "Send to Desktop (create shortcut)"

4. Upon first startup, I choose "Just Testing".

5. I almost exclusively use "Blend" and hit "OK"

6. Startup HWMonitor to watch temps and voltages.

When I am impatient, I will choose Blend to load the default settings, then I will click Custom and change the "Time to Run" to 2 minutes (default is 15), and I double the RAM usage to 3200 (default is 1600). If my system is unstable, these settings usually cause it to fail in 5-10 minutes, instead of 30-60.

Definitely not saying d1nky is wrong by messing with cpu priority, but personally I've never had to and I've had plenty of success with the program. If it fails, it fails. If it runs 12 hours of Prime, I almost never ever have any other problems with any other programs and applications on my computer.

Most of the other settings and whatnot in Prime95 are not for stress testing purposes. They deal with using Prime95 for its main purpose, searching for Mersenne Primes.

the cpu priority is meant to stop other programs accessing cpu resources.

people should realise that their system (frequencies/timings/voltages) need to be perfect to get prime stable.

and its a freaking mission to get 4.7ghz stable atm lol

Thanks for the replies guys.

@Basket_Case that is pretty much what I've been doing when I was bumping from 3.8GHz to 4.2 GHz (such a little step, but so much voltage needed...)

@d1nky do you have any tips on getting my RAM timings/freqs right? I get nervous as soon as I adjust my FSB and the RAM freq changes... BIOS only allows x4.4 x5.5 x6.6 etc... (Running Crucial 1333MHz DDR3 4GB x 2) Current FSB is 210 on 20 multiplier.

Sorry to hijack again guys. Thanks a lot for your help. +rep.thumb.gif

Ok, so for now, I am 4.6GHz stable on this 8350 with the following...

Using multiplier only, LLC to Auto.

CPU Voltage +.100 = 1.48v observed in HWMonitor @ 100% load

CPU NB VID +.025 = 1.22v effective according to BIOS

CPU PLL Voltage increase to 2.505 (2.500 stock)

Stable comprises of 10 runs of IBT on Max, 7 hours OCCT, 2 hours of Custom Prime, 3 work units completed successfully in Folding@Home.

I'm gonna roll with it for a day or two, then go back and let Prime run all night. Need to get my Folding back up to speed for a minute.
