Basically Nvidia had 3 options when it came to using GK110 in a geforce card:

  • Not release it at all
  • Release the units they have at a high price selling all of them to people who buy them
  • Releasing the units they have at a low price, selling all of them, and forcing their product stack along with AMD's to drastically lower in prices, cutting the main profits for either company

What should they have done with GK110? How do you suggest they release the thing without cutting their primary market ($150-400 GPUs)? Would it have been preferable for GK110 to underperform so it couldn't have been priced as high? If so, why?

If the Titan was 850$ or less, I would have four (yes 4) in my rig. Hope you understand that. Instead, I want to wait for Maswell or Volcanic Island.

People wanting a Titan but seing the high prices, will turn to AMD options (HD 7970). But thanks to Nvidia marketing and PR with the frame latency pointing out. Now everyone is over-exageratting this and all people get Nvidia.

So Nvidia knowing that nobody wants AMD now, spike their prices up.

And everyone , especially fanboys, are getting Titan.

Do you see the tactic? Lets talk about EXAGERATED frame latency issue (january) , then release the Titan at an ENOURMOUS price and lets bait everyone. (February)

Great, you like value for your money. This is why you buy AMD products. Good for you.

But that doesn't mean you can just write off everything that doesn't fit into your personal model of things.

I personally found the Titan to be an extremely good value, seeing as the performance I am getting out of ONE gpu blows everything else out of the water, without any chance of issues with scaling or microstuttering or compatibility... or anything. And it is the top of the line through two generations. If the 780 released and was more powerful than the Titan, there would be riots. But it isn't, so I am assured that I have the fastest single GPU card there is for another generation.

And again, assuming rebadging happens for the 800 series, it will STILL be right between an 870/880, if not identical to said 880. But that is purely hypothetical.

I am looking forward to that.

"Well, I can overclock the hell out of this 780, and it, like, totally, like, beats the titan at stock clocks."

Ignoring the fact that the Titan, out of the box, generally runs well over 1ghz, and we can overclock that just as much. It should be amusing.

I would have loved for them to have sat on titan and released it as a 780. For 799 and tiered their product line from there. Nvidia knew it was over priced that's why they are surprised it sold like it did.

Good points, except not.

Since I had the pleasure of using a 690 rig for myself, and it sure as hell didn't feel as smooth as my system's Titan. For something so exaggerated, it sure made a noticeable difference to me.

I would gladly pay the extra 200 bucks to get that 780 four months early.

Oh wait, I did... and they decided to cripple the 780 anyways.

NVidia didn't have the fastest single-card anymore and they had it for such a long time. So they panicked and released the Titan, not part of a series, which will destabilize everything.

If AMD comes with something as high as the Titan, which will not happen until at least December, they will price it MUCH lower than the Titan to force Nvidia to lower their prices. By pricing it lower, they have more chance to sale a lot of them. (This is speculation but it will most likely happen)

But as you can see, Nvidia has a HUGE period of time to remain their prices like this and milk the market. Thanks to AMD inactivity in the GPU market.
