Pump Placement

Thread Starter
Hey guys! I'm working on my first loop currently and I've run into a problem. I'm running out of space to put components so I'm forced to put my reservoir next to the hard drive cages and my pump in the 5.25' bays. However, this makes the tubing from the reservoir have to travel upwards a bit to get to the pump. I know that the reservoir should be before the pump, but does it have to actually be ABOVE it?

Thank you!

No it does not, but that's going to make bleeding your system a ***** to do. The reason people say pump at the lowest(2nd lowest) point in your system, after your reservoir is typically for two major reasons:

1: The gravity of water (or whatever fluid your using) makes the intake on the pump easier, theoretically expanding the pump life and expanding head pressure.

2: When you fill your system up, the first place the fluid goes is to your pump, so when you press the power button your pump fills your cooling loop with fluid.

It's usually recommend that you put your pump at the 2nd lowest point in your system (Your drain port typically being the lowest point in your system)

So does it HAVE to be? No it does not. Is it better if it is? Theoretically yes. Why theoretically? If you have a pump that has high head pressure it may or may not make a difference.

I'm curious as to how you don't have space for your pump and reservoir. Have you removed the unused (if so) hard drive cage next to your PSU?

What pump and reservoir do you use? If you have the funds and the correct reservoir/pump, you can buy a pump top. This allows the pump to connect to the reservoir directly without use of tubing.
