Anyways, which card was it? The HD4870 kinda left a negative impression of AMD in my head (though it was mainly the insanely loud cooler and horrible overclocking performance) skipped their 5800 series and 6900 series and i went back to Nvidia with their GTX460 and then 2 GTX570s. Got the 7970 for a great price and i've been very happy with it. Completely changed my opinion of AMD and i would happily buy a 8970 at launch if it's priced right and performs well.

cool story. i'll get an AMD card if they improve the reference coolers. or just continue to buy non reference.

Don't get too carried away - the 7970 was announced in Dec and available for sale in Jan 2012, so that's pretty much a 2012 part.  Plus the GE edition, which is the correct comparison, is from July.

To be honest though, I'm surprised we are even getting new 770/780 cards - I expected Nvidia to sit on their heels this whole year also.

And you can argue all you want that a GE card is just a vanilla card with a new BIOS (which it is), but go tell it to AMD. They are the ones charging $100 extra for it.

I'm prepared to pay up to a certain amount if that's what I want and if I can't get it for that price
then I regroup and recalculate..

but what you ask will not happen, if so then Titan would have been a $800 card @ launch.

edit:
bottom line is that 'it is what it is'...

That's a relatively new phenomena. The 7970 at its launch price of $550 improved price/perf over the similarly-priced 3GB 580 but dollar for dollar it wasn't really any better than the 6970; price drops 3 months later made it a great value though. Everybody was complaining about the price of the 7970.

Then we get the Titan, which is WORSE than any other modern GPU in price/perf despite being a year newer than the 680.

Now we're getting the 780, which is still a worse value than the 7970 despite being a NEW GENERATION, and the 770, which is basically a 680 but actually priced fairly (it's beyond me why a card slower than the 7970 typically costs more than $50 more)

The cheapest reference 7970 on Newegg costs $390; there's a piece of crap PowerColor that probably uses PCB components worth a total of $5 and can't overclock for its life for $380 if anyone is actually interested in that though.

The cheapest 7970 GHz Edition is the MSI Twin Frozr III, which costs $400.

If you ask me, the Twin Frozr cooler alone is worth more than the $10 asking price over the vanilla 7970.

There's also a Gigabyte Windforce 3X GHz Edition for $399.

enough to make a man's head spin if not up-to-date....

that's what all this is intended by marketing to do.
just by the latest release at the greatest price.
