If you make the image a CD....a image must be mounted first before it can be read. You could mount it before and pull the info off it, and stick it on a usb...but ya can't boot from a image.

sorry to butt in here, would this work if I created an image of my OS, put it on a CD etc. and then put it on another system? I.e. getting around having to pay for another serial number? Or does the rule still apply about having to use the same MOBO? Thanks

Yes, you can..but you must have the serial number. All your really doing is making copy, which isn't illegal if you own the copy. This is different then copying a recovery disk, which would have drivers for that motherboard. Make sure your just copying the OS.

Also I'm unsure of the rule with mircosoft..but I believe its only 3 computers you can use the same serial number for updates ...etc

And Rusty...if your talking about restoring....even if you make a disk of your OS, your gonna need a serial number...if it's a image of the original, there is a way to recover the serial number from the image. Or better yet....write down the serial number your using right now...

No, you can't boot from a CD, you have to restore that image to a hard drive, then boot from that hard drive.

But there is a problem, you can't restore an image into an empty HDD, restoring an image requires the previous windows installation,

neat that will save me having to pay stupid amounts of money for the new build I am doing for myself and the one I am doing for my parents, could someone point me towards a tutorial?

thanks

No, 1 serial to one PC only, and if it's an eom license then it is not transferable.
