Questions about SATA controllers (Marvell, Sandforce etc.)

post #1 of 4

Hey everyone.
I want to know, for general purposes, which is the best SATA controller?

I've been doing some research on SATA controllers recently and found: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Quote:
OCZ = Indilinx or Sandforce.
Crucial = Marvell or Phison
Plextor = Marvell
Samsung = Samsung
Intel = Intel
Kingston HyperX = Sandforce
Kingston Tech = Toshiba or Jmicron
Corsair Neutron = LAMD
Corsair Force GS = Sandforce
Corsair Performance Pro = Marvell
PNY = Sandforce
VisionTek = Sandforce
Transcend = Sandforce
ScanDisk = Sandforce
Adata = Sandforce
Mushkin = Sandforce
Patriot = Phsion
Verbatim = Phsion

I'm mainly interested in Samsung vs. Marvell vs. Sandforce vs. LAMD (and maybe Phison) You can probably guess some of the brands I'm looking at.
I've been hearing good things about the Marvell controllers.

Another thing, I learned that my SSD has a Marvell SATA controller, and my motherboard has a Marvell SATA port. Would it benefit me if I connect the SSD to the Marvell port?

Any insight is greatly appreciated. I'm totally new to this stuff.

some companies have multiple controllers than just the ones you stated,ex. Intel and patriot have sandforce drives as well. Drive controller depends on the drive model, not the company name. Also, it is SanDisk , not ScanDisk lol.

there is a lot more to a SSD than the controller. Most of what makes a good SSD is the firmware and support.

Marvell mobo controllers suck compared to the native ports.

Try to refrain from the Marvell ports because they usually give lower 4k reads and writes which affect the OS . They can cause system instability and one can experience freezing/stuttering and longer boot times when enabled because it is a 3rd party addon, has a limited bandwidth of ~or below 400MB/s for both of the ports total (even in RAID 0 while the SATA 3Gb/s ports can reach higher speeds), higher latencies, and from what I have found still do not support TRIM
