Core 2 Duo Mobo compatibility with Gateway?

Thread Starter
Ok, i have a Gateway 838GM computer with a pentium 4 630. Heres the motherboard specs please look at it. it did say its "Support for an Intel® Pentium® 4 processor in an LGA775 socket with an 800 or 533 MHz system bus"
http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERB...2007sp33.shtml

Will i be able to just take out the pentium 4 and put in a core 2 duo? or do i need a new motherboard? its going to be a pain if i need to cause then i have to buy new case/mobo/power supply and take my whole computer apart to put in new case.

Also if its possible to do that, can you recommend me a cpu? im trying decide between the E6400 vs the E6600...is the 2 extra mb cache make much of a difference cause i dont care too much about the little extra ghz? im not too hardcore about performance but if its more bang for my bucks to go with 6600, i might. only if its really make big difference and worth it though...also i dont plan on overclocking cause i dont know how/scared.

Um.

The CPU is 1066 FSB.

You need a mobo that can do 1066FSB.

That one can't.

sorry buddy but it looks like your gonna need to get a new mobo.

i upgraded my sony Vaio to a ASUS mobo and kept the vaio case. its just a matter of keeping the same form factor. you could give that a shot. you can look for a mobo that could possibly fit in your case, get the core 2, upgrade teh PSU and keep everything wheres its at.

The fsb is more on the motherboard than the cpu, you need a 965 or 975 chipset to run conroe or a equivalent nvidia chipset.

Trust me, that is my current motherboard and conroe wont wotk on it.

ok guys i just found out intel will be coming out with core 2 duo e4200 which is 800 fsb in 2007 Q1. So, will this work?
You will not be able to install ANY other CPU in that motherboard.

That MoBo comes with a P915 chipset, that will never support any and every Dual Core CPU Intel released and will release.

You're stuck with what you have.
