raid 0 (4 drives) mirrored to 1 drive?

Hey guys,

I had an idea that i wish to go through with.

My motherboard (990fxa-d3) can have 6 sata devices plugged in - i was thinking:
-4x 2.5" 500gb HDDs in raid 0 which is backed up onto...
-1x 3.5" 2tb HDD
-1x DVD drive

because the raid 0 of 4 500gb drives is 2tb and i have a 2tb drive - can i have the speed of the 4 drives in raid 0 but still have it all backed up on the 2tb hdd.

My ultimate goal here is to have the speed of a SSD but large file size

PS - is 4x 2.5" HDDs in raid 0 going to be as good as a SSDs read speed. assuming the readspeed of the 2.5" drives are ~75MB/s, 4 x 75MB/s is 300MB/s.

Thanks
My Precious

personally i would look at keeping your 4 x 500GB drives in RAID 0 and the 2TB drive on its own. then do a back up plan of the 4 x 500GB drives using something like robocopy or freefilesync. it s may not be like RAID 1 mirroring but do backups of the RAID 0 array at what frequency you like, such as hourly, daily or weekly.

This,

That and you will never get SSD like speeds with HDD's, the seek time is still going to be at least 10x that of an SSD.

do what stubass said, I have a guide on automating the whole backup process in my backup guide in my sig.

No, SSDs are way faster due to access times and random speeds. However, you can get 2 new 1TB drives and RAID 0 them for 400MB/s reads. I'm getting 4 when the WD10EZEX's go on sale and making a RAID 0 array from that. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the quick reply guys/girls, much appreciated.

I will definitely follow your guide Sean, you seem to know a lot about storage solutions.

Since im going to do this - would there be any difference in speed with 5400/7200rpm 2.5" drives?
When they are in raid 0, will a rpm change affect the performance?
