guess what I do for a living.. what your going to be doing with that laptop.. your gona need the most powerful processor you can cram in that thing with the most ram and the best video card. end of story.

why?

rendering animations will take years on a machine with a average processor and you cant really overclock a laptop because of heat. Throw some raytracing in there and render with hdri in mental ray and you can forget it.

video editing with premiere or after effects will eat up tons of ram when ram previewing or just basic operation in those kinds of aps. plus you will wish you had a huge hard drive for storing raw uncompressed video and targa sequences.

High poly 3d models require high end gpu's to not lag in the view port since it is rendered in real time.

these are all very basic reasons why I don't have a laptop and have powerful desktops and render nodes. If one of these guys can find you something powerful enough you'll be good. But don't be afraid to get something thats power hungry because you will regret it if you get something under powered.

ya i do quite abit of video and audio editing my self and have had exsperiance with 3d my computer takes some time 2 render video in premiere pro 2 no fancy effects just fades and gpx. the more power and ram u have the better. you will most likely be on the ac all the time. the sli will help with 3d if your 3d modeler suports hardware rendering witch it should. audio youll be fine with what you have.

Good system... particularly if you managed to get that spec in your budget.

As for 2 external monitors, you'll need the matrox box. They also have a cheaper dualhead2go, but the triplehead also supposedly will do just a dual. I think someone else makes one too... Other than that, you can only have 2 monitors total including the laptop one.

Dude,

If you get a gaming laptop with high end graphics, the battery lifes going to be sucked down regardless. If you want games, plug the sucker in.

I use a HP Pavilion dv 8125nr for games while mobile. I plug it in. It's nothin spectacular but I can play WOW

battery life is not a big issue. Of course, it would be great to have a laptop that last for 10 hours, but I usually sit in a room where there is a ac adaptor.

What is the best company for you guys ?

www.rjtech.com
or
www.flawlesscomputers.com ?

It's the mac daddy of mobile video cards... expect a 3dMark06 around 5200 with that build. Very respectable for even a desktop.

BTW; for overclocking that rig, you're probably sol. The bios is locked, as is your cpu: I'm lucky because I got a E chip that's unlocked. The gpu is overclockable, but only if you reflash... I've been unsuccessful getting RivaTuner or Coolbits settings to "stick". Also, the mobo only has a cpu temp sensor and harddrive (get the free Intel TAT program). No GPU sensor. Also hit up killernotebooks and look at the executioner page. He shows a minor cooling mod for the gpu (heatsink additions). He's also working on making a better cpu & gpu cooling block, so I'll keep monitoring it. The stock cpu cooling is garbage (cheap chinese steel plate w/ single copper heat tube). The gpu isn't too bad, but could be improved. Also make sure that once you get it, it has the latest bios (they added the core2duo with the latest). Go get it directly from Clevo.

If anyone happens to know how to work around the bios, I'd love to hear about it... nothing seems to be working. I had another thread in the Intel general forum.

when I first started I had less than you have now, but once you get better you need a ton of computing power to render in enough time. I now have my own render farm of dual cores but it didn't start out that way. btw, quad core has only been out for about a month so of course your not use to it, lol nor am I.

with that build you should be good for a while. If you get serious with 3d you will want more. lol I already want a army of quad cores and I've only had this farm of duals for a little while.

MightyAA, even if you could OC it, could you keep it cool enough?
