What's the best RTS game out now?? - Page 3

Comapany of Heros is awsome for what it does for the environment for an RTS. I will warn you though, it can get stale as far as variety goes, only two factions and you can't play mixed games, example, 1 axis and 1 allies on team 1 vs. 1 axis and 1 allies on team 2 in a 2v2 is impossible to do, it's strictly axis vs. allies. No FFA either. But it's still a revolutionary step in the genre as far as gameplay is concered. Units can take cover behind almost any object, vehicles have certain components that can be destroyed (engine, main gun, etc.). Bodies gib and have ragdoll physics, buildings canbe knocked down by driving through or over them, and the whole expierience is one giant micro fest.

Home world is another is another solid if a bit dated game, screen and map control are kind of weird at first but once you get the hang of it they work extremely well. The graphics on HW2 are still comparable today, and in my opinion there's always a place for space battles in everything... even Driving Ms. Daisy needed a space battle. The problem is there doesn't seem to be as much micro involved as with some of the more up to date RTS games.

Now onto my rampant DOW fanboyism
Dawn of War however is near RTS perfection and the spiritual precurser to Comapany of Heros. It has seven races when you have both the expansions, all of which are unique. The depth of strategy is huge, and is very very micro intensive, so much so there are several races built around the idea of microing your units like a god. Admittedly the graphics on it compared to COH are a bit dated looking. With the newest expansion, Dark Crusade, there are ALOT of bugs and imbalances that need to be fixed, but in my opinion they don't ruin the game. When I say bugs I'm saying gameplay bugs no fatal one's that BSOD your system or CTD, so i other words it's not an EA game. It's like I've said in other posts on this same subject. "Dawn of War is alot like Starcraft, except with more robots and punching" And it answers a very important question that has plagued everyone since childhood, who wins in a fight of Tanks VS. Demons? And it's rumored Dawn Of War 2 is due out next year, but that's a rumor.

Ignore Battle for Middle Earth and it's sequal. They're giant spam fests IMO and eat system resources like popcorn to very little effect. But it is an EA game after all, and we shouldn't expect them to write code when there's money to be made. Oh and C&C3 is gonna be garbage I can feel it. In fact out right ignore any games from EA, EA wants to eat babies, and I hear from a reliable source Bin Laden is a debugger for them.

Rise of Nation's and Rise of Legends are good fun if you're not looking for alot of micro but rather a over arching strategy. Rise of Nations was awsome, it was fun, innovative, the amount of destruction you could rain down was pretty good. Rise of Legends was Rise of Nation's in a fantasy setting, and thats about it, after 3 years you would think they would've improved it some, and the sound in ROL is atrocious. Graphics for ROL are meh, micro is meh, the whole thing is meh. Rise of Nations is much more solid IMO.

Supreme Commander is not out yet first and foremost, secondly it is the pseudo sequal to 1997's Total Annhilation. It's being developed by the same person (Chris Taylor) just at a different company. From what I've played of the beta nothing has changed in ten years. It plays almost exactly like Total Anhilation with some added features and better graphics, which if you haven't played Total Annhilation then this game is going to be BADASS!!! It's still one of the few games out there where it seems like you can feel something blow up, and the unit count is huge, in the range of 10000 for each player I think. Only problem is the creator hasn't changed much of the gameplay in the last 10 years, and I finally got tired of TA back when I was 21. So it might be new to you and therefore also good.

Anyway sorry for the long post. I only meant to rant about DOW but I guess I got carried away. That covers a good portion of the major RTS games out right now. Hope this helps, even if I am biased against EA.
