Lapping or remove IHS - Page 2

same way as w/ it on. you put'er on and screw it down...

if you want to be safe, what you do is get black tape and make 4 ply stacks and put them on each corner. then you will really be safe.

It should be safe to do on your CPU. Just dont try it on any LGA 775, Socket F or AM2 CPUs, since the IHS is soldered to the core.

I hear it is tough to do, but if you overtighten the HSF, or waterblock in your case, you Might crack the CPU die. So be careful in overtightening

Take the plastic piece off of it...Keep and use the metal backing plate and tighten down evenly...Like has been said put some black tape on it ,even it out to the top of the core if you want a little extra insurance...

Please try to avoid double posting by using the button.

Back on topic, I'd just lap it. It's been proven to lower temps and you won't have to worry about possibly damaging your CPU die with a heavy HS.

you make the 4 ply and put it on each corner. and you go to home depot and get a paint shaving razor (like the ones you clean the glass stoves with). they come w/ this cool plastic razor holder, and its JUSt the right thickness to not cut your resistors off.

oh now come on. the CPU die is more solid than the IHS. and to prove it, tonight i'll test it. i'll risk cracking my AMD3500+ core

The cheepo sheet metal/flat box cutters control the depth!
There is a Post in here with ptic... se if I can fine it.
Do sink the CPU pins into the provided shipping foam to protect them in the process.

if you're afraid of doing it, you should consider trading with somebody that's already done it.
