Wanting some advice

So just wanted to come to the masses at OCN and see what decision they think I should make.

Currently using a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon. Verizon is giving away a free Droid DNA until May 21st. I went ahead and ordered it because it's a 600$ phone for free. Can't beat that right? Well, before I ordered it I browsed XDA and found out newer version can't be rooted and that is a pretty big deal to me. At first I didn't think it would be that big of a deal but the more I wait for the phone to arrive at my door the more I have my doubts.

This is where my decision making comes into play. I can either keep the DNA which is a really nice phone in and of itself. Stick it out and hope that one day there is a way to root it and live happily ever after. Or. Let it sit in its box, wait for the Verizon announement on the 22nd, sell the DNA and pick up either an S4 or an HTC One (if thats what the announcement is about).

What would you guys do? Currently I'm leaning towards using the DNA just because I think it would really be a nice phone but I'm torn because I really wanna try to use a phone for at least a solid year to two years before getting a new one. I typically keep phones for like 8 months.

What exactly do you use a rooted phone for? If you typically hold on to phones for 8 months or so, how bad would it be if it wasn't rooted for 8 months?

As you said, it is a free $600 phone and that is pretty awesome!

Haha it is and honestly I didn't mention this but the battery is what really terrifies me about the DNA. The GNex is awful with its battery but I keep reading mixed reviews saying the battery on the DNA suprisingly lasts a full day and others saying it does not.

As for your question about root. I enjoy flashing different roms, tinkering with phones, etc etc. I use a lot of apps that rely on root access such as Titanium Backup (if I can't flash I have no reason for this app though), Ad Blockers, Battery apps, and a few different apps that I feel like I'm missing.

I guess I should probably just sit back and ride the train with the guys in development. If the phone gets rooted then awesome. I also need to remember that my life will change drastically in the next 8-12 months with me graduating school, getting married, and hopefully finding my first "grown up" job. The industry I'm going into wont allow me to be on my phone all the time like I am at my current job or at school. So I may not even care about having brand spanking new phones and stuff like that. That's the main reason why I'm wanting to break out of this switching phones habit. I just wanna make sure I get a phone thats gonna be good to me for a little while.

Well congrats on "growing up" I'm not quite there yet and don't really have the money to switch phones every 8 months.

I would probably say if you have the money to spend on a new phone, and you don't want the DNA, don't get it. That being said it seems to be a pretty neat phone and the longer you look at the reviews, the more negative reviews you are going to see.

I would go ahead with the free phone for 8 months or so and if you like it, you just "made" $600. Otherwise you can make a purchase based on your new needs. thumb.gif
