Undervolting/underclocking in order to lower TDP?

I have an i7-950. It's rated for a max TDP of 130W. In a bit here, I'm going to be replacing it with a 4770K and relegating this chip to server duty.

I really, really would be down to build a completely fanless server, and for a CPU sink I'd like to use the NoFan CR-95 IcePipe. However, reviews state that heatsink is rated for a max dissipation of 95W.

What are the chances I could get away with underclocking to stay within the TDP range of that cooler? I don't plan on driving the server hard at all. It would mostly be an idle fileserver. Maybe the most active job it would be running would be seedbox duties, but I don't do that very heavily (an Atom chip does that for me presently, and even that is overkill). I do plan to run ESXi on it, so I could even give my VMs under the maximum number of threads to keep utilization down. I could even turn off hyperthreading.

What do you guys think? Bad idea?

I wouldn't try it, but that's just me.

You'd be dropping TDP by 25%, so if that calculates to voltage/CPU speed you'd need to have the CPU around 2.2 GHz for it to work the way you're thinking.

I'd just use the stock cooler/cheap cooler so that it's quiet and keeps the temperatures down, especially on a 24/7 server.

If you case is big enough any of the top twin towers will passively cool on i7 3930k 130w. SA SB-E, PH-TC14PE, NH-D14, DeepCool Assassin, Dark Rock Pro 2, Silverstone HE01 & HE02.

TC14PE is not on Vortex chart but eTeknix ran it on i7 2600@4.4GHz. I have ran TC14PE passive on my i7 920 stock @ 43c delta

I actually plan on making some kind of low-cost bench case, and leaving the motherboard and CPU sink exposed, to showcase it. thumb.gif So it would be 100% in the open, ambient air flow would probably help a little.
