New rig, need some advice.

Hello everyone,

I'm a new member of Overclock.net. I've been a few months time lurker and this forum is well provided with wisdom.

I have a question,

For 3d moddeling / graphics design / graphic motion design AND gaming, I'm gonna build a new computer. It's gonna contain the following components:

Case: Corsair 900D (Including around 15 fans.)
Motherbord: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
CPU: Intel i7 3930k (Gonna get OC'd)
Memory: 64gb Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz DDR3
Videocard: 2x GTX 780
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i (Yeah yeah I know.. it's gonna be retarded in a Corsair 900D, but I only picked the case because of it's really good implementation of dust filters and I love the slick look)
PSU: Corsair AX860

Storage:

Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD
3x 3TB Western Digital Green.

Now my question is: since it's now revealed that the GTX 780 is gonna have the same TDP (250w) as the GTX Titan, will a Corsair AX860 be enough for this configuration?
For everything but extended periods of 100% full load on every component, I'm going to say that PSU should be enough. If you were to fold 24/7 at 100% then I would probably suggest a kilowatt PSU but if you don't plan on being at 100% load for days at a time then 860W should be fine.

I would look into other options for cases, although it's clear budget is not a huge concern with this build, the 900D is about $150-$200 more case than you need. Maybe the money saved there could bump you up to 1866MHz RAM which I would think would benefit you more than the 900D.

Hehe thanks for the info, so for the majority of gaming time and a few 3D renders (which will not use the GPU's or atleast not load them) it will all be fine including the 3 HDD's, SSD, a lot of fans and ram?

I appreciate your advice on the case aswell, it's just that I'm so much in love with the case that I don't want anything else, I've tried to find a replacement but I couldn't find any (except the Corsair 350D) but I just want a big monster case just for the lulz. thumb.gif

If you have time look at the threads under my signature

You got lots of other good options then just the Corsair AX860

AX860 has problems with coil whine just so you know

If you dont mind the color the NZXT HALE 90 V2 850 watts is a very good option its a new unit so its not something that is very common yet

tongue.gif That's certainly understandable and if you've got your heart set on it, then who am I to tell you different. I just wanted to make sure you were aware that it was much more case than you need. I would still probably consider faster RAM if possible, just because everything about the rig is at least one step above today's averages except for the the RAM speed (the RAM amount is a step above) because 1600MHz is pretty standard already today (I run 2133MHz for example) and seeing as how you will actually use the RAM for modeling and design I would think that faster would be good for you.

You will be more than fine for all gaming time and many 3d renders even if they used both GPUs, and you'll also be fine for as many HDDs and fans as you can fit. All of these tasks won't load your entire rig to 100% like folding can so you will be more than fine with them. I only mentioned more because when running at 100% load on everything for weeks months or years, you would want a little more headroom, but for your needs as I understand them 860w should be fine.

If you want a more budget friendly power supply then go with the Roswill Capstone 750-M - $109.99

If you'd like a bit more headroom then either of these are great.
Corsair HX850 - $129.99 after MIR.

Corsair AX850 - $144.99 after MIR.

Shilka is gonna get annoyed at me for recommending Corsair but all their power supplies are on sale at the moment (sorry wink.gif).

If you want a power supply similar to the AX860 (850W-ish and platinum rated) then take a look at the Kingwin Lazer Platinum 850W - $159.99 after MIR.

Didn't notice this one at first but it's got $50 off if you include the MIR. Just as good as the AX860 but much cheaper and doesn't have the coil whine issues.
This would be my choice, that price is amazing.

I got nothing against Corsair and their units its the company itself i dont like

Corsair is fine if you have no other option or you can get them dirt cheap otherwise most of the time you got better options

Dont like the AX860 as it has problems with coil wine

Thanks for the input guys! Much appreciated.

Thing is, I'm actually stuck with the AX860. In the netherlands we do not have the availability of the Rosewill PSU's. I also want to order everything in a big bulk at my local retailer so I can negotiate about a nice discount. They also don't sell anything above the AX860.

About the memory, the retailer just got in the 64gb pack of the Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133mhz which costs €789 while the 64gb Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz costs €464. (Damn prices went up.. was €320 a few months ago.) Would the almost €320 money increase be worth it? They only have these two 64gb packs.
