Thread Starter
If I have normal (not expensive) headphones or speakers, does it still make a difference in the sound quality that is worth getting a sound card? Or will it only be worth it if I get really nice speakers?
It does George and get the Asus DGX with the HD 428 on Newegg. Use Uni drivers.

My bet is on Xonar DX too. It's probably the best sound card I've owned under $100.

Depends on how cheap the headphones are.

dont matter, you dont need surround sound, since they are all only stereo, they are not true surround, you would need at least 5 speakers and a sub woofer

I have the turtle beach PX5's and they do sound great and are miles above regular audio but when I got my SB-Z and logitech 5.1 surround speakers and plug my Ps3 into it as well as my computer the quality us ten times better, and the rear speakers actually perfectly tell you where gun fire / footsteps are coming from lol

I think there are a few that actually do have several speakers but really they are so close to your ear that although it sounds like surround take them off and listen to full surround with actual speakers not to mention with a good sound card you can use optical out to a nice 1000Watt plus receiver and then use that. as well as input optical audio

instead of going for soundcards - ever consider going for external equip? get a dac/amp combo - like a FiiO e10 or something along those lines that are under $100 - you'd be surprise what a difference it instantly makes. going with one of these things - you're also safe if you're gonna go for some mid-hard to drive headphones, as the device itself will amp just fine. i'd honestly say, for something under $80 the Fiio E10 is the best thing i've spent towards achieving decent sound. the improvements were immediately noticed. i used to use a ht omegastriker - not the top dog at all, but it was also an $80 card - but with the Fiio E10 at the same money, it has truly open me to a world of real music - and ofcourse, this hobby gets addicting. considering that you're mostly going to be using heaphones, then this external/desktop setup is definitely the way to go. i have the AKG-550 and with the HT-striker, it barely posses enough power to drive the headphones, volumes were extremely low, with the Fiio e10, a slight turn on the dial was loud and adequate and the bass is now contained and not explosively.

While headphones don't offer 'true' surround sound, a good source can definitely improve sound stage and positioning to give a more immersive circumaural experience. I'm not talking about the gimmicky multi driver models here, but proper stereo headphones. Ideally, before you think about a sound card and amp, you want to go out and buy the best headphones/speakers you can afford.
