Hey everyone, Jlear3 here! I'm obviously new to overclock.net but I've worked on computers in my free time as a hobby foe about 6 or 7 years. I've mostly built my own computers, my last rig was a 2nd gen i7 with xfire 4890's, 8gb 1066 ram, in a scout sniper case, I've been out of building due to financial reasons and just picked up my friends HP Pavilion a6430f desktop for $50 and I'm pretty happy with it... It has an AMD phenom x3 8400 @2.1ghz, 3gb of ram at the moment and 2x 320gb 7200rpm HDD's.

I know from previous builds that the amd x3's are just a locked down quad core and was wondering if anyone knew of a way to unlock the 4th core with a HP bios... Inside the bios there's nothing useful at the moment. Also, I was wondering if there was a bios update for the board (ASUSTek Computer INC. NARRA3) The current bios is v6.00PG

Also, I'm wondering what the socket is, ASTRA32 is saying its am2+/AM3 but I don't want to buy a new processor upgrade if I'm not 100% sure it will work in the board. I know a new CPU will fit even if it's only AM2, but I cannot find a bios update to be sure that am2+/am3 are supported. Any help is welcome and thank you for taking the time to read my first post!

Thanks for that, feel much more comfortable buying a CPU now that I have 2 sources indicating am2+

One source is quite enough. wink.gif

Haha, never know with manufactured computers, they make me nervous when upgrading because when I build a pc I make sure to know everything, and this is all new stuff
