Attaching case led button to led strip

Thread Starter
Hello all, so I thought I figured it out but i didnt. I have the CM 690 II advanced case which has the led button on the top to control led fan lights, I have it hardwired to a fan currently to be able to turn off and on the leds when I want. However I have a LED strip which I want to also connect to it to turn them on and off, I tried connecting the led strip directly to it but it does not work because there is no power going to the led strip.

I drew a diagram to try and help explain it if it helps, Im just trying to figure out the way to wire the button to the led strip to be able to turn it on and off.

Can anyone help? I really want to be able to control the lights so I can turn them off at certain times, I found a diagram for the wiring however it was not the same wires I have so it didnt help me and im not much of an electrician so I cant figure it out lol, thanks in advance.

So there's a few things that could be wrong here:

1. Too low voltage. The wire you've tapped into is 5v, not 12v. Will not light the strip.

2. Wired backwards. LEDs are diodes. Diodes allow current to flow only one direction. If they're backwards, they won't light.

3. Tapped the wrong wire location. Did you put one wire on each side of the switch? If so, that won't work. The switch is probably - only. You would place the LED strip in SERIES with the switch. Disconnect one side of switch, place that wire on the + side of the strip. Take another wire and go from the switch to the - side of the strip. If it doesn't light, swap wires at the strip.

my problem is for the switch there is only 2 cables a black and red. I found a diagram showing the black to the black (-) and the red from power into button and out in led with 3 cables a black and 2 reds

so i just tried connecting the red to the red and black to the black on to the current wire going to leds from psu... and blink computer turned off and i said lots of curse words.

Yeah, don't do that. You shorted the + and - connections on a molex connector. PSU should recover from that happening, but it's not advisable to do that again.

Ok, so how the wiring for the fan LEDs and switch should look is this:

[molex +] --- [switch] --- [fan LEDs] --- [molex -]

This is assuming the fan LEDs are running on 12v.

What you need to do is place the LED strip in parallel with the fan LEDs. Like this:

[molex +] --- [switch] --[+]-- [fan LEDs] --[-]-- [molex -]

The [+] should be the + (red) to the strip, the [-] would be the - (black) to the strip.

If you need a better explanation than that, or would like me to sketch over a picture of your stuff to show you where to connect to, put up a pic of the switch and led fan wiring.

It somewhat makes sense but a sketch would help even more, i appreciate your help a lot. heres a picture of everything hopefully that helps

if this picture isnt helpful i can draw out a sketch of the cables and everything
