How to tell if my graphics card needs a RMA?

Well lately, i've been experiencing black screens, where i'm doing something, then all of a sudden the screen freezes, then turns black, while all the audio is like a buzzing sound.

There are no bsod's and there are no minidumps.

If you can't by any reason see my siggy

i have the following

ocz vertex 2 120gb
wd caviar black 500gb
3930k
gigabyte x79 ud3
(case and optical dont matter)
silverstone strider 750w
sapphire 7850
aaand i think that's all you need to know o_O
(and im using catalyst 13.4)
when i play games i black screen, when i browse the web i black screen, this doesn't happen every day but it's beginning to annoy me. Should i pop into the store i bought it off and ask for a rma on my sapphire?

Seems rather suspect. I have a few questions though.

  1. Have you tried any other drivers?
  2. Is the card overclocked?
  3. What are the temperatures like

It wont work, lmao

actually I think thats monitor related, does the computer shut off? try connecting another monitor as soon as this happens and see if there is video.

I had a monitor that would do something liek that although no black screen I would get a rain bo effect (lcd not CRT lol) in a digital pattern across the screen, not SUPER bad but DEF noticeable. and all I had to do was turn off the monitor then back on. it could e the fact the cards a store bought rig, but I am 99% sure its probably aong those lines.

check drivers etc if that don't help. make sure you dont have conflicting drivers either.

i doubt it's my monitor :s, my pc doesnt shut off and the audio is buzzing, so it seems that the entire pc is locked up or something

Oh and whats interesting to note is that the computer goes to sleep sometimes, and doesn't wake up again no matter what i do. I read this on ocn an and apparently it has happened quite a bit on sapphire cards o_O

This sounds like what was happening to my card. The frozen computer, black screen, unable to wake from sleep.

Do you have a multimeter to test the connections on your video card?
Although the way I did it with my gtx 480 is run it off only one power connector because it has two, and I saw that when using the other one, it wouldn't work. But you only have one. I'm not sure how you could measure that the power is working for the connectors. Maybe someone else has an idea for this.

Or maybe you can just try switching the power cables from your PSU? Try using a different one on the video card.

EDIT: If you have 4 pin connector you can try it on both sides of the connector. To see if the connector is the problem. It will probably still run off only a 4 pin connection.

the last time i know the problem was on hd7870 cards and above. i'm using the 7850 OC version.
Try turning off/down the shadow in the graphic options. if the comp does not crash, then its the gpu

The same experience with my old AMD led me to think that the ram might be the culprit, although i am not very sure.

So i did some fishing around and it looks like it's a common problem for 78xx cards

http://www.overclock.net/t/1323103/behardware-saphire-7870-black-screen-of-death/10
i might go for the rma because i highly doubt a black screen (im getting exactly this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8erBOaOBck) is the cause from anything else :s
Never rma'd anything before
