Got an old server - what can I do with it?

Hi all,

so we cleaned our storage at work today and we came across our old server. My boss told me to toss it but because I'm clever I did not. Instead I now have it at home with me.

I've never done anything with servers - so you can think of me as a total noob.

The system is a Compaq ProLiant ML350 G3

It has a 2,4 GHz Xeon

516 MB of memory

2 x 72.8 GB Storage

If it's possible I'd like to make a home server for my movies etc.

What can I do? smile.gif

I would buy a boat and use that as the anchor. Otherwise, a file server is really the best bet.

A server is simply a computer dedicated to do specific task(s).

I would just toss it out... no SATA ports, not enough memory, and consumes too much power.

You can build a better file server (HDDs excluded) for less than $200...
Once again...

Yeah totally possible, Install Seviio and you've got a DLNA server already.

I agree with Duckie

Aside from being on the low-side resource wise... that server is going to probably consume around 435 watts of power continuous.

Same thing I went through back when I had my old IBM X-series server with the same specs as the ML350.

"External 49.324 TB (14 x 146.8 GB) x 24"

Does that mean that the system supports up to 24 x 2 TB external HDDs?

RAM is probably not a problem since 1 GB is $16...

My electricity use is included in my rent, so power consumption is really not a big problem.

if its a SCSI server the drives are dirt cheap now. just make sure its nowhere near you because the noise will get annoying. scsi spins at 15k rpms and makes a hell of alot of noise

It is a 7 year old server....

They don't make 2TB HDDs for SCSI (not to be confused with SAS) or IDE.

Think about it.... you're paying $32 for 2GB of RAM when you can just spend the same money on a modern computer.

Used drives are dirt-cheap.... but the cost per GB is not much better than a modern HDD.

So a standard USB external HDD won't work?

E: Ok, even if it did it's far more expensive...
