May switch to android

Thread Starter
Hey guys, so ive been using windows phone since they first came out and overall been very happy with the OS, Currently im looking for a replacement phone in july where im a bit underwelmed by the hardware out now and currently using HP veer as a substitute phone. In terms of apps i only use a handful of about 4 or 5.

Looking at my options the Galaxy s4 looks to be a nice phone to consider if no new windows phone really interestes me by july, Although since ive never used android for and extended amount of time i did have a few questions (and a few dumb ones too probably) redface.gif

- Is there a way to ring the phone remotely, (as i do misplace my phone and sometimes do keep it on vibrate sometimes)

- I been looking at a Galaxy note 8.0 an noticed it had v4.1.2 of jellybean where the S4 had v4.2.2 , would having two different versions of the OS hamper using them together (keeping information synced wirelessly or any other perks)

- Also wanted to have induction charging and did see this indigogo project and did see different sort of "patch" induction charging pads for other android phones, Are these sort of aftermarket add on chargers okay to use or could there be over heating problems etc? Im assuming android is able to notice if an induction charger add-on is being used?

- My GF who also uses windows phone was looking at the HTC one or the S4, would there be any benefits in both using the same phone (s4) or would using an htc one with a s4 work just as well.

... i think thats all the questions i can think of right off the top of my head, Thanks for the help guys! biggrin.gif

(p.s.sorry for the long winded questions tongue.gif )

If you have the chance, go for the HTC One because it's gorgeous. I have a Galaxy S3 and can attest that the Galaxy brand is very good however.

You could probably get an app on your phone in order to ring and locate your phone even when its on silent mode: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antivirus&feature=search_result
The software support 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 should be the same so I don't think you would have to worry about have incompatibility. Possible to provide specific apps+features?
These induction charging devices shouldn't be causing any heat problems if it is providing the phone with the appropriate power in order to charge these devices.
If you want to go with a phone with lots of features, go with the S4. If you just want a Android phone that has a very solid build quality, I would go with the HTC One. I would go with the S4 because imo Samsung products would probably get faster updates than HTC One and I like their features like Share Play and the wave to answer a call feature.

Thanks for the reply guys smile.gif my GF is the most on the fence about choosing the HTC one vs the S4 (i like to say shes an HTC fangirl) tongue.gif .

i will say the htc is a gorgeous phone (IMO the aluminum gives it a more "lux" feel over the s4) but currently leaning a bit towards the s4 since it has, has expandable storage (was hoping for close to 100gb ) and induction charging option without a case. I guess the more important thing the storage part since i want to use it as a mp3 player. Although if i went with 64gb htc one with the all access pass and stream that may work too.

Hardware wise they both seem pretty similar, from my understanding software updates come from the manufacture, is htc and samsung pretty good with updates or do they tend take a pretty long time?

I guess for the most part apps we would use together may be games and share files/pictures (which we do alot), I remember hearing about tap to share (not sure if thats a samsung thing) .. which i started thinking could be useful instead of sending via MMS or email.

But honestly the only apps i would prob use regularly is google maps, opentable,. fandango, google play and email/web

Hmmm thats pretty cool the AVG app though does sound like ... i guess kinda like a lojack for android mobile devices, would using the location services and remote device lock require additional fees?

Thanks guys +reps biggrin.gif

Have you tried any Windows Phone 8 phones? Particularly the new Nokias? I cam from Android to WP8 and have no interest in going back, and absolutely adore my Lumia 822.

ive had a nokia 920 and my GF had a htc 8x tongue.gif Long story short gave those phones to our parents since both of our upgrades are coming up in a few months (mine in july hers was in january) and they some how lost/broke their phones. But overall we felt the phones had something lacking; se was looking for a larger screen, and really dislike the bluish purple color, and i was hopping for expandable storage frown.gif

We both love windows phones but there seems to be less hardware (currently) for wp8 then there was for wp7, although i have heard rumors about a nokia EOS phone which does have me interested smile.gif

Samsung does have an app that lets you find your phone in case it is lost or stolen, I think you have to go through their website and sign up for it, I also like the galaxy line over the recent htc phones since you can have an extra battery and switch it out in whenever needed and some of the software that comes with the galaxy s4 is pretty neat.

Also Samsung are WAAAAAY faster at releasing updates for their phones.

Nokia has been on a roll lately IMO(despite somewhat displeased investors), they just released the 928 on Verizon(slightly upgraded 920), unveiled the 925(new metal unibody flagship phone), and the EOS is in the wings and rumored to have a 41mp camera! lmaosmiley.gif

Really though, Samsung has been pumping out some great stuff too, if someone snuck in my house overnight and switched my Lumia 822 for a Galaxy Note 2, i doubt I'd complain lol.

Androids allow you to back up all your contacts, apps, browser settings... everything... I don't know about saved files, but there are even automatic photo and video uploads available if you have the data to burn up. This is a huge feature, and it is all built right into the OS. Microsofts phones offer some of this to a limited extent, but I found it.. clunky.

And some way to ring the phone remotely? Yeah, get a phone and call it lol

With WP8 I just use a combo of skydrive and google's backup services, since all you really need is a gmail account, but it is nicely integrated on android
