+5x HDD 3.5" small form factor case?

Thread Starter
I've been looking for small form factor (mini-itx) cases that can fit at least 5 3.5" drives (and ideally one 2.5" SSD) so far fitting the mark are the Fractal Design Node 304 and Fractal Design Array R2, does anybody else have any suggestions for cases fitting this requirement?

Also how do the two Fractal Design cases (Fractal Design Node 304 and Fractal Design Array R2) compare to each other? Any recommendations?

I'd definitely have to recommend the Node 304, such an awesome case.

The Array R2 is no longer manufactured and I don't think it has been for a while. You may struggle to find it. The Node is better anyway wink.gif

So if I understand it correctly, basically the 304 is excellent and as such dominates the market and I should not bother looking elsewhere.

I'm not sure how much of a market there is for SFF that supports five/six large drives, but if it's more than just yourself then I'm sure it would dominate.

Is this for an HTPC or something, because maybe an external four drive enclosure would be more appropriate?

I think you should also question which mITX boards actually provide more than 4 sata connections.

My vote is for the Q25. If you wanted to add a full length video card, it would fit too (I think).

The cases is for a home build NAS silent, fanless (besides case fans) system. With both the Lian-Li PC-Q08B and the Node 304 being in the same price range, the Node 304's emphasis on silence seems advantages to me even if I lose the 5.25"drive bay (not such a big issue with a NAS).

Others have recommended I simply buy a pre-built NAS but I havn't been very impressed with the quality to price ratio and I'd like something I have free control over from an applications point of view.

As far as I can tell, your best options are going to probably be the Node 304 or the PC-Q08B. Both are good, attractive and pretty-quiet options. I'm certainly partial to the Node, though.

If you are willing to dish out a little extra cash, and don't need a graphics card:

http://www.u-nas.com/xcart/product.php?productid=17617&cat=0&featured=Y

This case fits your bill and then some. I'm using one currently, a little tight of a fit for most heatsinks, but it seems like you are building a storage server like I am - so that's not a huge issue.
