No, so far there's nothing that really works. There are a few extensions and even a script that attempt to make it work, but they're not all that good. Chrome is too stripped down of a browser to get this working correctly.

No, it's Firefox. I don't know why Esc is working for you if you haven't done anything to make it work because its well documented that Mozilla intentionally changed the behavior of Esc so that it no longer stops animated GIFs.
