[SOLVED]should I upgrade my E8400 to an i7 870?

Currently I am running my roommates old C2D E8400 as my only rig. Recently my roommate bought a used i7 3930 of ebay and is waiting for his parts to arrive. He offered me to buy his old parts after his upgrade:

i7 870
asus p7p55 - one ram slot got damaged when his psu died
8gb ram - ocz I think

The rig is used for internet, office and some light gaming - skyrim, medieval 2 and the likes.

As I didn't plan to upgrade right now, would there be major improvements - I've heard skyrim is quite cpuhungry? And will there be a similarly powerfull upgrade path in the near future? I would pay 150€ for the parts.

Honestly that seems a tad high especially with some damage on the board. I have essentially the same cpu and have no issues with playing any games maxed out. You will be at the top of your upgrade path on the cpu though as they dont make the 1156 cpus anymore.

Thank you for your opinoin, burksdb.
The damage on the mainboard doesn't bother me much. Pretty much everything is working even dual channel mode, just not with all 4 ram slots.
I am not shure about the price yet, but I am watching some ebay auctions of lynnfield cpus. I'll think about the price later.
I am just wondering if ther will be some new tech in the next 2 years or so that will offer similar performance for like 150-200€. All the new technology like instruction sets, pce3, usb3, ddr4, hsa and so, they don't seem to be real gamechangers. So waiting for kaveri, steamroller or broadwell seems kinda pointless.

Great CPU even three years after release, I have an 860 and an 870 and haven not had a need for any more speed outside of video rendering and folding. Get him to give you the damaged board for free and find yourself a used P55 board for cheap and keep the busted board as a backup. thumb.gif

Great deal, and you won't need more than 2 memory slots anyway. (If that's 2 x 4 GB at least)
