GTX 680 FTW + 4GB sli vs GTX 780 3G sli

Thread Starter
I game in a 2d surround set-up at the moment and I may have the option to upgrade my cards in the near future for what I consider to be a reasonable cost. I understand the 780 is suppose to be about 15-20% better than a 680. My primary question is centered around the memory of the two cards. Will I lose anything going from 4GB to 3GB. My typical resolution is 5940 x 1080. I typically don't see the vram go above 2GB but I am thinking up upgrading my current 23 inch monitors. I don't want to make a short sighted decision.

Will the upgrade to the GTX 780 (SLI) from my current GTX 680 FTW + (SLI) b worth it?

Will the memory on the cards present any issues?

Thanks for your thoughts.

We don't have a concrete answer to that yet.

But I'm pretty sure the GTX 780 3 GB (384 bit memory bus) in SLI will be around 15% faster than your GTX 680 4 GB (256bit memory Bus).

I don't think it is worth it, especially if they are priced around 600$ - 700$.

Look through this (I know it has nothing to do with the 780, but its the titan in sli/tri-sli vs 680 sli/tri-sli. Some games, the FPS is barely different, so thing for a second.)

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_Titan_SLI/

If the 780 is faster than the 680, but slower than the titan, than it is slightly on par with 680 in sli/tri-sli. As the above poster said, it won't be worth it for it's price.

Please exclude a single 780 vs a single 680.

Thanks, I understand that we have a few days. I might be able to get this for just an additional $100 per card (depending on price). So I won't take a performance hit in my set-up with the lower memory?

Not at all.

Even that there are not huge differences between GTX 680 2 GB vs GTX 680 4GB since they both have a 256 bit memory bus.
What I mean is that you will benefit MORE of the 384bit Memory Bus. I suggest you wait for GTX 780 benchmarks before selling your GTX 680s. Worth the price from 680 SLI? I don't think so.

The Memory Bus is the bottleneck.

So to sum things up, performance wise I would see about a 15% gain in a GTX 780 SLI set-up vs my current GTX 680 SLI set-up.

The memory difference in the cards(GTX680 4GB vs GTX780 3GB) is not a huge factor in overall gaming performance at my resolution. However the memory bandwidth of the 780's is a plus.

So if I am able to "step-up" to these for roughly $200-$250 (total for both cards), you don't feel the difference is worth the extra cost but I would have a more powerful graphics system overall with the GTX 780 3GB SLI.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to make your posts. Very helpful (+1 rep)

Good summary, but I posted a graph earlier showing the differences between the GTX 780 vs GTX 680. And notice that the GTX 780 also has another processor, the GK110-300. You will also benefit of that.

Good luck making your choice thumb.gif

I run 3x 1440p, 4gb 670SC sli, and I would love 15% better for another 250$ lol. At surround 1440 resolutions, I can tell that bandwidth constraints present issues. That feels like it would be a decently flat price/performance swing. 2 680 4g ftw's is about 1100$ new(evga store), so thats like a 23% price increase for a 15% performance increase. That isn't terrible imo. Especially if the gains in bandwidth constrained conditions is greater than that 15%.

I got mine for 569.99 each at Amazon. So if the price is $699 then I would pay roughly $260 (total) plus shipping costs. If I did my math right it would be about a 18.5% increase in price over my 680's. This is of course assuming they will be available for Step-up before my step-up clock expires. I won't lose much sleep if that happens.

I had contemplated waiting on the 780's but thought they would not be out until at least next fall, so I got antsy.

I really love my current cards, I have no complaints, but as long as the vram won't hold me back I am thinking I might go for it for the performance bump.

I know you can get VRAM up in Skyrim and other games with mods and certain settings.

I wonder if the newer 780's and 770's will have the logo that lights up.
