Help me to choose cpu for Autodesk Maya.

Thread Starter
As the title suggests,I will be working only with Autodesk Maya (I will use 3D Max very rarely).
I saw somewhere that AMD FX cpu's are highly optimised for newer version of Maya (in the chart I saw FX6100 beating i7 2600k) well I know in 3D Max Intel cpu are superior but like I mentioned I shall be working with Maya 90% of time.
I sold my PhenomII X4 960T which was clocked at 4ghz yet struggled in Maya during rendering, now my main question is I got a binned FX8150 from a friend of mine at a good price. I must mention I can't afford an upcoming i7 4770k as it will cost almost 3 times the cost of FX8150's price I'm giving to my friend,I can't even afford a new FX8350/8320 (price of hardware is much higher here in India).
So my question is how is FX8150's performence in Autodesk maya compared to current generation quad core king i.e i7 3770k since newer version of Maya are AMD optimised and how much boost in performence will i get overclocking my upcoming FX8150 (this is a binned chip and oc to 4.8ghz with ease on air)?
Need suggestion form a PROFESSIONAL who works with AUTODESK MAYA.

I'd say go for the FX-8150, and yes with a good air cooler you'll be able to overclock it good, not sure what the 8150 limits on air cooling but it's all about finding your limits or place you are comfortable with in overclocking in general.

Since newer versions of Maya is optimised for AMD FX cpu's will the FX8150 perform better than i7 3770k?
Asking this cause I saw in the chart that FX6100 is beating i7 2600k.
Was that a fake result or was it true?
I can't beleave FX6100 is beating an i7 2600k.

hello, the cpu you have is very good.
http://www.overclock.net/t/1251047/epic-amd-cpu-grudge-match-amd-slug-it-out-orama-2012
chart shows its a near match, except Integra maths as that's intel.

I'm a freelance 3D Artist who uses Autodesk Maya and Mudbox. I have an Intel 3770K, and when I'm using Maya the CPU is idle pretty much all of the time. Its only when you're rendering that the CPU gets pushed, and even then it doesn't go at 100% constantly whilst you render (I don't know if that's an optimization thing or not, it seems to speed up and slow down at either end of rendering each individual frame).

So any mid to higher-end CPU should be fine, although I personally wouldn't go lower than an i5 3570K/2500K or AMD equivalent. More RAM is important for creative applications, I have the full 32GB in my system and I regularly see 90%+ usage when I have larger scene files open.

A hefty workstation GPU is important too, especially if you start using Mudbox at some point or if you have very high-poly count scenes. Workstation GPU's are optimized for Maya, so try to avoid Geforce or Radeon cards if you can.

Hope this helps.

So I got my AMD FX8150 its a used chip but almost new and got it at a good price plus its a binned chip and guratees oc to 4.8ghz,I have also upgraded my cooler from CM Hyper 212+ to a CM V8,got the V8 at a great price.
So I got my answer, both i7 sandy/ivy/ AMD FX 8cores are great performer in 3D animation softwares.
Well I'm not going for bragging rights which means even if i7 (sandy/ivy) cpu performs better than FX 8core (animation softwares) in real world the difference is only of few seconds which I can manage to overcome by OC'ing my chip.
The best part is I got my octa core at a great price so nice upgrade from 960T IMO.
Okey so I will be getting as many GB of ram possible, probably 8GB will be enough for now will later on get another 8GB.
The reason I'm sticking with a Radeon card is because I'm also a gamer.
In future when I'll have a dedicated rig for animation purpose I'll get a workstation gpu and have another system for gaming.
Thanks guys.
Will soon post oc results of my new Bulldozer chip.
I have bulldozed my rig now. biggrin.gif

Why did you go with a FX8150 instead of a FX8350? It is a veeery healthy performance bump.

Read my first post carefully, the max budget I had was around the price of FX6300,now lemme remind you the price difference between FX6300 and FX8320/8350 is lot.
In autodesk maya I will benifit from more cores and newer versions of Maya is highly optimised for AMD FX cpu.
Then I got a deal on FX8150 and like I said its a binned chip and gurantees oc at 4.9ghz.
I will try some tweaks through which I can match my FX8150 to a FX8350 like overclocking, installing windows 7 bulldozer fix,use core park.

first what version of maya? I have the autodesk entertainment creation suite for 2014

I would say the cpu is just fine, personally I use GPU rendering but ram is also important,

one way to bypass that is to work at low poly in parts, then step it up as needed, using the needed res for the project. then you can combine the parts, rather than building one big scene, build each component separately then combine them all.

to be honest in order of importance:

GPU
RAM
then CPU

If you look at my rig in my sig, you can see, that this is what I wanted to design my computer for, however I only do some on the side, not professionally. although I did go to full sale before I got bored lol. smile.gif

RAM is important, It's best to have around 16GB or more.
